yet another score, STEEL PORN

What sizes of 4140??? Any 2x2 square?? if so i think Ed Caffrey would be very interested. He uses it for his hammers.

dude... that brought a tear to my eye... :)

now that is one heck of a haul... ... i'd clean them out if i were you.. heheh

some almost look big enough for a post anvil...

Greg

WOW!! Very impressed. Almost anvil sized chuncks you've got there too. Fun times ahead!

I think you've topped my thread from about 9 months ago where I posted a photo of a pile of 52100 rollers and bearing rings. Someone took the time to figure out that it would take me 673 years, making one knife per day to use up all of my 52100 steel. I think you defintely have that beat. You've even got a huge variety of steels available, which I don't have.

I think a pat on the back and a wish to you that you enjoy your bounty is in order! You da man!!!

Hehe, I need to score a large suply of tool steel someday, so that I can work with the same stuff day in and day out year after year and never worry about "what if I run out of the stuff I like?!" like I do right now

How do you use steel like that? I was assuming you can make an anvil but how would you use it for knife making? do you have to cut it into strips? I would think that it will be one heck of a job doing that....

I need a homemade anvil. I saw the website where a piece of steel was imbedded in a 5 gallon pail filled with concrete. Do you have a piece that would be good for that? If you are interested ion selling is please email me. I wonder what shipping would be for a huge chunk? I am off to the scrap yard this weekend, I hope to score somehting nice but I doubt I will find anything quite so AWESOME!

Thanks a mil.

...if i can get a constent supply of this would there be any takers...

Do you even have to ask?:D If you are able to cut pieces into chunks 25lb or less I would be interested in W1, W2, 10xx series, L6, and O1.

Bit short on cash right now so I'll take a look at next months sale. :)

The A2 is great for fixtures, D2 can be made into fixtures or knives if you can cut it, cpm3V great knife steel, L6 O1 the same in fact combine to 2 and make on heck of a damascus billet. 4140 makes great hammers and anvil tooling, don't remember what else he has. Most will need to be cut into smaller pieces or forged down. Those big pieces of steel can make a decent post anvil depending on how heavy they are. It is a great bunch of steel, most of which will cost over $8/ pound or more new. 500lbs X 8 = $4000.00

ok every one i went back and got another score. i found 3 bars of A2 1 1/4 x 3/8 x 30" at 15 pounds total and 4 A2 rounds that are 1"-1.25" x 36" at 46 pounds total. and 10-15 1/2" x 1.75" x 24" light green sticks of micarta :D. i did see a stack of 4140 rounds around 1.75" x 36" or more. maybe around 300-500 pounds. i will be selling most of it. its funny because i just got notice that im being layed of. maybe this will get us through untill i find another job. the god lord is watching over my family.

well i might be interested in some thign if there is anything left

hope this works out for you and can cover that layoff (that sucks BTW) sell some steel and make some knives to get you through

might like to talk to you about the A2 plates or even that 3v if you dont want to mess with the largish block of it
good luck

nice haul....you'll need a shop and a BIG forge to work some of that down...I'm jealous :)

2 feet of that L-6 . . . you know you want to sell it to me (attempted jedi mind trick)

:D

I know how the layoff thing is, Carrier incorporated shut down manufacturing in Syracuse, I was working as a goldsmith in a store here, suddenly we weren't getting behind on the work at Christmas, I was setting diamonds for stock just to keep busy, I didn't have seniority so I got laid off. There is no work to be had in Syracuse, so I went into business for myself. I had to get a day gig to keep things going because building a business is slow when you're broke, but every year is a little better. If you're not afraid of work there will always be something
Best of luck to you, may your layoff be short and a step to better things!

so long as i have my tools i can "make" money thats how i look at it tools are the last thing to go and the first thing to get when spare cash finds its way to me

Exactly!
The one thing my wife never questions is tool purchases, she has seen every tool I have bought since we got married AT LEAST pay foritself, and most of them generate income.

Looking forward to seeing some of your blade work featured in the "for sale" section (yes, sell us good steel too, but use some of it for your own work)

Lookin forward to seein' it!

the problem is that i know that im going to keep buying this steel but i dont know how much more my floor can take :D. maybe i should get a storge unit and turn it into a shop. how much do you think a metal place would charge me to cut down the big rounds. man D2 is like $25 a pound new.

does anyone have a color code for steel. lots of bars are painted but thats all.
