Yikes.. I'm lost!!!!

Does Boker have a smaller stockman? The only one(s) i could find were 4" closed - I'm looking for around 3" or so.

Their standard Stockman is 4" closed. Their Medium Stockman is 3-1/4" closed. And there's a similar pattern, the Whittler, available at 3-1/2" closed.

There's also a smaller stockman in their Boker Plus (made in China) line. I can't vouch for the quality.

------------

The stockman-style Old Timers, if they interest you at all, are available in quite a range of sizes and variations. Just be sure to look for "USA" on the tang stamp to ensure you're getting an original.

Okay, I've been holding back, but I can't stand it anymore.

This is the best knife Case has ever made - a mini copperhead:

Some would argue this is better...

Case sway back jacks or the single blade gent model. They are awfully nice. But, none of the ones I show will appeal to you if you don't like the wharncliffe main blade style. The mini copperhead can be had with a standard style clip main instead of the wharncliffe.

These are all small knives in your stated size range - just over 3" closed.

Wow! Simply stunning! I love those! They are slightly out of my price range though :( I really need to stick to it.. After all of your help, I believe a knife similar to a stockman, mini copperhead or whittler would be perfect, I just need it to be around 3" and $50

I just picked up a Case Mini Copperhead in "deep canyon bone." The quality is very good except for a jagged blade edge. It is 3-1/8" closed. Price was $46, and there's a $5 rebate. I don't care for wharncliffe blades, but it was just too interesting and beautiful to pass up.

A peanut knife might interest you; it's one of the few common patterns under 3". Price for this one is $42, plus there's a $5 rebate.

The Boker knives I mentioned above are generally in the $40-50 range, depending on handle materials.

Boker make a 2 blade knife which is fantastic. A copperhead design. I recommend it.Nicely rounded for pocket carry.
Many newbies find S30V hard to sharpen. 420 is a better choice to start with. I don't think the boker is hard to sharpen.
Here is my Boker. It is mid sized, well under 4 inches.

I'm seeing the Boker Copperhead listed at 3-3/4". Maybe too large for the OP, but the rounded pattern should make for a nice pocket carry. The best part, it's also available in C-75 carbon steel. And it's way under $50, again depending on handle material.

GP Knives is a paid dealer here are Bladeforums, so I think it's OK to give this link:

Some would argue that they are both overshadowed by the case texas jack :D

Don't worry about getting lost...the clue is to enjoy it and not necessarily search the way out (not too soon anyway)
Back to suggestions now.
As you might have understood by now, the world of traditional knives is huge and variety is impressive, if you're used to modern folder.
Now, trying to fulfill your specifications, I will go with the AG Russell lockback. 3" closed, locking, good steel, in your price range, and so on. Alternatives are Buck and the Case Copperlock.
But then...
If the locking thing is not a must, your range of options explodes into the world of slipjoints. And here enter the Case mini copperhead, swayback jack, peanut, and so on.
If stainless is not a must, then enter the Boker line, and so on.
So, as you see, you're a kid in a candy shop. Like all of us. Choose any of those that calls your name. You will be happy, and without noticing, you will be stepping into a new world. And this subforum has a place for you, if you wish.

Yes, some would of course. I happen to like them a lot myself. Just a wee bit less than the MCH. A great choice of course, but a bit bigger than the OP was looking for. A 3" closed knife is a pretty small item. Peanuts, tiny trappers, and such are in the size range the OP is looking at.

It would be nice to know what the intended/expected use of the knife will be.

Intended use is just a low profile every day knife, used for scraping things, cutting string/rope, opening packages, etc.
Man! I'm in love with Bokers, but I fear that the minimum length I've seen, 3 5/8", is too big to be low profile in my pocket.. :( BUT THEY LOOK BEAUTIFUL!

Also, I'm preferring the Bokers over the Cases because the Case's blades seem a bit too skinny for my taste, I'd always be afraid of breaking them, or at least more afraid than I would be using a Boker

meh, if you dont use your knife as a crowbar, hammer, wood-splitting wedge or clay pigeon then you probly wont break a decent quality knife.

if you need to scrape things then maybe you ought to look at a two-blade knife. that way you can keep one blade real sharp for cutting and the other can scrape.

Again, thank you to everyone!! You have all been a HUGE help! And have posted many beautiful knives!!

One of my current favorites is a 3.5 " Boker green jigged bone stockman pattern in carbon steel that should be in your price range. Even though it's half an inch bigger, it's not a big knife and easily disappears in your pocket, even in khakis. It is Boker's item number 117588, I think I picked mine up on the great Internet auction, but should be available at one of the BF preferred dealers.

Forgive the stock image, I've been too lazy to take one of my own :D

Hope this helps!

Take a look at Case's pocket hunter. I'm not sure about pricing but the blades are of the proportion you are looking for. I believe a diligent search and maybe a little wrangling will find you one for $50. It has only two blades. I would post a picture, but I don't have one.

I DID IT!! I got the Boker Beer Barrel Whittler!

Thank you everybody for your input and faithful replies!!
I really look forward to receiving my knife and becoming a part of this forum! Although I think I'm more excited about the knife, to be flat honest hahaha :) I happened to find it at a vendor who offers 3.99 one day shipping, so It'll be here soon!! :)

Again, thank you very much to TLARbb, Rsmith, Bob W, quattromori, mtagent, pertinux, Lycosa, qncygnnr, Boggs, pinnah, mnblade, billypilgrim and AKC. Especially thank you to those who took the time to post pics and ask further questions. Totally stoked about getting my knife! And I stayed about a dollar shy of my budget! Hahahaha :)

You will most likely be very happy. Boker makes a good knife and a whittler is a wonderful pattern. I much prefer it to a stockman myself, but I'm kinda strange (some say).
