You buy a knife and really like it, do you buy a 2nd for collection?

Just curious about this...

For me I don't really buy "collectible" knives per se, but I have found that if I buy a knife and end up REALLY liking it I have to buy a second one for collection, etc. It really bothers me if I don't.....I guess it's an OCD type thing for fear that the knife will be discontinued....:o

I just tell myself it's an investment...:D

Nope, there are too many different knives to buy two of the same :D

I'm too limited in how many knives I can buy as it is. I suppose if I had more money to spend on knives I would. +1 on what Kreole said.

Did that with one knife I really liked, and regretted it. I'll probably sell it when I get the chance. Every once in a while, you come across a fantastic knife, but there are too many varieties out there to just keep buying the same knife.

I bought a 2nd Swamp Rat RS... It's a great little knife--- and cost is affordable enough to have a second on hand, not necessarily for the collection. I have a "as new" piece and my user. Perhaps for collecting I suppose or to use... I've lost 2 knives.. and they were knives I enjoyed and used.. so getting a second just made sense.

Nope, I collect knives to use, not to be put away. Somestimes I buy a knife use it for awhile and stick it away because I just didn't like it all that much.

i will buy multiples of knives i really like, or ones that are discontinued and hard to find, in the past few weeks i have been able to buy three spyderco chinook 3 knives.

i have given up "collecting" knives, so all are users these days. no, i don't get a second one, since there are far too many good knives to use in a single lifetime. :)

Nah, I never buy 2 of the same knife. Yeah its cool to keep your blades in nice shape, but the more you use them and wear on them the more character they develop. If you gave your son your knife collection and all of them still looked brand new, he'd probably think you were crazy. Well used knives tell the story of the owner and the work he did.

No, not for me.

I'm buying production models at the moment, and I figure that a replacement is a few clicks away should I need one. I'm a knife user, as opposed to a collector. Though, I do respect those that collect, as they usually have a lot to contribute to cutlery discussion boards.

I dont collect. I do have backups of my heavily used work knives that I cannot live without ( Spydies D2 Para & Millie SE 440V) and it just so happens that both of them are now discontinued.

As somebody called them, "pre-need replacements". For knives I really like, I would get backups if I had some extra money. This would be in case of loss or the knives being discontinued from production.

I'm really glad I picked up two more of these after I got the first one and liked it so much.

It depends, I think...
usually people don't buy the same knife for like 2 or three times...
like Kreole said, there are too many option than just buy one more knife that you already have it ;)
But, some guys I know, they love the knife, they buy 'em over and over a gain.
Cus they afraid they're gonna loose it, break it, or if they use 'em too hard, it will get some scratches, then it'll no longer be a collectible knife ;) some buy 'em just becus it'll be discontinued
well, if you really like the blade, and the rice is affordable, I think you should buy the second one.

Yes -- I have 2 or 3 of everything I have and 99% of my Knives are Safe Queens and most have gone up in price since I bought them. Got 5 Seb's and they just went up in price. Have 3 Spydie Kris knives and they are now out of site.! We won't go into how many I have but it is a few.! LOL

Nowadays I don't "collect" knives... I like to use them for whatever EDC tasks I throw at them and always have only one kind of whatever knife I can get my hands on unless I lose one that was dear to me. Variety is the spice of life.

I liked the Schrade Sharpfinger so much I bought an example of pretty much every known version. I ended up with about 20 or so. Then a few years later I decided to go in a different direction and sold them all. I liked Spyderco hawkbills so much I bought nearly a dozen to hand out as gifts.

Normally, if I really like a particular knife I will get at least 1 extra, maybe 2. I use my knives and if I have a spare at home I won't feel so bad if I damage or wear out the one I'm carrying.

all three are chinook 3 right? why do the first two have a different type of jimping on the top of the knife ?

I edc an old Endura3 which is no longer made, so I picked up two more off the exchange, one in ATS-55 and one in VG-10. I also liked my Rat-7 in D2 so much I picked up another when they were REAL cheap. I think they're discontinued now too. I got back ups on these knives because they really fit my hand the best, great ergos. YMMV.

Was thinking of getting another NMSFNO but when the Team Gemini came out I went with one of those for a little diversity.
