You buy a knife and really like it, do you buy a 2nd for collection?

I have started doing this recently. I have 3 zt 551's, 2 Manix 2 M4's and 2 Para 2's cst-20p. I will probably at some point sell them but for now they are all keepers. Now I am going after the 3 sage knives. 2 down one to go.

I own many knifes and have never purchased a duplicate knife in the past, the one exception is my recent purchase of an Umnumzaan. I purchased a second Zaan because it was such a good price (shipped) that I had to buy it. Both Zaan's were used and in excellent shape. I have also purchased pocket knives that I have lost, which is really not the same.

Just curious about this...

For me I don't really buy "collectible" knives per se, but I have found that if I buy a knife and end up REALLY liking it I have to buy a second one for collection, etc. It really bothers me if I don't.....I guess it's an OCD type thing for fear that the knife will be discontinued....:o

I just tell myself it's an investment...:D

I use to be really bad about buying a backup to knives I liked but now due to lack of funds, that is way out of the question for me. One positive, I was able to sell them and get most of my money back, so you could say it was like a short term savings account.

Depends on the price and future availability, if its a limited or waiting list knife I might buy a second one to sell it sometime if the price is likely to go up.

Hi czombie -

I only have two knives for which I have more than one example; my edc Vic waiter - just in case I lose the primary, and multiple Buck 112 Rangers - I like those so I have some early variations of that same model.

best regards -

I don't think I have 2 of the exact same knife but I have lots of the same type. Example - many Spyderco Millies, enduras, para millies, sebenzas, BM grips, etc.... I like to collect but I can't see having exact duplicates.

Typically with gear such as knives, guns, flashlights, rods, reels, etc. I buy one use it if I like it I go back and buy another one or two if I can afford but always another one. I do this for several reasons, first we only have on child a little boy so one is for me and one is for him when he gets older, if I can afford a third its a spare in case one is lost, stolen, or damaged in some way that renders it unusable. Second, is given my luck the manufacturer will surely either discontinued that model, try and improve it and change it up which inevitable worsens it, or go out of business altogether. Third, I believe were in the midst of severe recession and in all probability or heading for a depression so I may not be able to afford all of this stuff in the future, or companies will go under and the items will simply be unavailable, etc. Fourth, if the first one breaks I have another one, if that one breaks I can probably cannibalize them both for parts and make a perfect working one, and still have parts for additional future repairs. I could go on but I operate off of two (2) philosophies, those being Two (2) is one (1) and one (1) is none, and the other is Better to have it and not need it, than to need to it and not have it.

I have if it's a great deal. But I don't have any safe queens, I have bought multiple variations of the same knife, like have all sorts of Large Sebenzas in all king of configurations, and a while bunch of Benchmade 940s but I use them all, I don't mind my knives looking used, so I use them all, no need for multiples.

I typically buy second of any knife that I will carry, typically folders. Usually duplicates, although I will sometimes buy a variation depending on the knife and my mood.

Spyderco's Cat is one of my favorite pocket EDCs. I bought three of the original Cats and two of the Chicagos as soon as I learned that Spyderco was discontinuing them.

I stashed the spares.

I just received the all-new Cat, and while it's a fine folder in its own right and I appreciate that Spydie is trying to keep costs down for us, the new model has 440C steel, G10 scales and no jimping compared to the S30V, CF scales and jimping on the original.

Hoarding? Sure. But I'm kinda glad I did.

I've got duplicates of a few knives that are now discontinued, were limited runs such as my VG-10 Caly3 and some special run Victorinox SAKs. I've also bought a few duplicates of a few knives after I lost the original and wanted spares in case I lost one again. As others have said though, there are too many great knives available so I don't make it a practice of getting duplicates just to keep as safe queens.

I usually try to have at least two of each model knife! If I really like the knife, I definitely want a backup for it. And if I really like it and know it might be discontinued, I buy several of the same model to have a reserve!

Not often - but I have 2 Spyderco blue G-10 BladeFroums Natives PE - one for EDC and one in the display case.

I only buy what reeeeealy floats my boat. I only buy with the intention of use. I've had several Sebenzas at a time... a couple SnGs at a time. There ARE a lot of different knives out there... but not many that I find justifiable or all that impressive. It depends on how the cash flow is going. If I had all kinds of dough floating around, I'd have at least one Lg 21 just for backup... as it stands though my Lg 21 Sebs backup is a Sm 21, a Para2 and a Millie.

Often when I find something I like, they quit making it. This applies to more than knives. So I usually buy enough extras to last a long time.

I sure am guilty of picking up an extra. The Spyderco mules, one to use and one NIB, Benchmade HSS 710 still can't wear out the first but have a backup and am a real sucker for variations of good designs like the Manix series. I have more knives then I can ever use but most are doing much better then the stock market.
