You buy a knife and really like it, do you buy a 2nd for collection?

I usually buy two of any knife I "believe" I will like. Not currently available knives but pre-orders. If I don't like them enough, they both get sold. If I like them ok, one gets sold. If I love them they are often both kept, one carried and one stashed.

However, I'm learning more and more that a knife can be outdated in a year with the rate of releases from the fine MFG's we all know and love these days. That means the new stuff is often more compelling to me than keeping even a one year old knife. The only counter element to this notion is fancy blade steel. I tend to keep at least one or two knnives with special steel even if the knife doesn't do it for me. If anything, they make great trade bait for someone who might want it or they're easy to sell later.

Yes I do. And I have seldom lost money doing this. Over the years things go up in value as they become rarer. Spyderco, Kershaw, to name a few.

I have extras of users, usually because I stash them in different places or I got them at a good deal. They don't have to be top-of-the-line knives either , just decent knives.

3 Esee 4's
4 Esee 3's
2 Esee 6's
2 Izulas
2 Becker 14's
4 Remoras
2 SRK's
2 Sealpup elites
2 NWR's
2 Buck Vantages
2 Bucklite max
2 Buck 301's
2 Blind horse bushcrafters
3 Kabar Doziers

Geez , didn't even know I had so many till I made this list up:eek

For me:

1. Douk-Douks.
2. Opinels
3. Valiant Trading Company Parang Lading (one monosteel and one pamor)

I just recently got into knives, and when I bought knives I really liked I didn't want to use them. I even ordered a 2nd Bk2 because I really liked it but I wanted one to be a user and one to be kept in perfect condition.

However, I had this s&w s.o.r.t knife that I bought for work. I pryed with it, used it as a screw driver, abused the crap out of it. One day I decided to give it a little TLC and after finishing it up by oiling the blade I was shocked at how beautiful a nicely worn out blade looked. Now I know what people mean by wear gives an item character. After that I returned the extra Bk2 and told myself that all of my knives are going to be users.

I got 2 small Dan Burke Barlow's, since its so awesome knife but limited number (300)
I got 2 Gec #25 burnt stag. (one came via trade) its great little knife
I got victorinox 3 Alox soldiers (I got one spare when after been almost exclusively carried alox soldier for 4 years) and when I heard they would not make Alox soldiers anymore I got 3rd.
I got victorinox 4 pioneers (1 silver, 1 red and 2 blacks ) partially from trades. They're almost like alox soldier + keyring so I got them too.

but mainly I got just Sak Alox soldier and Dan Burke Barlow specifically more than one because I loved 'em and wanted spare due limited number they are made or are no longer manufactured.

I got whole bunch of Opinels too. Such great knives for such low price.

I'm finding it harder and harder to find blade and knife styles that I like these days....that's also I reason I buy two if and only if I REALLY REALLY like the knife. It just seems to me that a lot of folders are getting too gagetdy, fancy, and just plain silly looking in design.

I have a few knives in variants, I have never bought exactly the same knife twice:

- Spyderco Caly 3 VG10/G10 & ZDP/CF
- Spyderco Stretch 2 VG10/FRN & ZDP/CF
- Klotzli Sailor G10 & etched stainless handle
- Opinel 7 and 8 in a few varieties of handle materials and stainless/carbon

I'll buy multiple copies of knives I really like. Example... Gryphon M-30A1, I have two now, ready to order a third. To me it is a classic design, excellent build quality, value priced. All good reasons (to me) to own more than one.

If the budget allowed it I would probably do that for my absolute favorites, but so far no seconds. If I ever decided to do it though at this point it would likely be a second BM 710.

If I find something I really like, I will buy at least one more for my son and if I find an inexpensive style I like, I will buy several for gifts. I have too many knives to get doubles just for myself.

The opposite: If I buy a knife for my collection and really like it, I might buy a second to carry.

If I buy a knife and I really like it, I might buy a second if the knife is a limited release or if it is being discontinued. That way, if anything should happen to the knife I really like, I have a replacement on hand.

Nope. Too many other makes and models I want to add - can't bring myself to buy 2 of the exact same knife.

Also - I rotate knives so frequently that the ones I have never wear out - I grow tired of them and sell them before they are ready for retirement.

Sometimes, I would buy one to use and one to keep, just to look at when new. I have bought 3 S $ W 9 mm's, different models, when I only needed one!.

Nope, I've never purchased a duplicate knife. I figure I'm not going to wear out the first one, so why get a second one? If I ever have to get a second one (e.g., first one breaks and can't be repaired), I can usually find one for sale on the secondary market. Of course it may be at a higher price if it was really popular and/or limited production, but if I loved it enough to get another one, the price will not be that big of a factor for me. YMMV
