You can only keep 1 EDC. What is it today? Yes, I searched similar threads. I'm downsizing my life. Photos in thread.

My Buck 112, early 1980's, baby brother to the 110. Guess I should use some Brasso.

"Developed throughout the year, the model 112 Ranger was finally announced by Buck's Sales Director, Don Hamm, in a letter to dealers on October 31, 1972. Buck began shipping the 112 to dealers later that year, although it wasn't officially added to the catalog until 1974."

Personally I don't think you have all that much stuff there. Most of it is daily use items which enrich your life and give you pleasure. You really are not burdening the next generation with some enormous task of disposal.

Keep it all, use it and enjoy it. We are here for a good time, not a long time. Life is too short to only carry one knife! :)

Hell yeah, well said 🥂

I echo the sentiment. I don't know much about that spread of items on your counter, but it doesn't seem like that much in terms of knives. If you're set on dispersing the blades, keep the sebenza and get a magnacut reblade when the opportunity arises.

It's got to be my big Rukus, with a Vanax SuperClean blade at 61 Rc, 15 dps and 15 thousands BTE. I can't find a better knife for my purposes, but I mix it up with different scales. Super solid. A good chopper. Blade falls shut when the axis lock is disengaged.

What is the 1 single EDC you would keep? Please post your photos if you've got 'em. It's a serious question as I'm not opposed to moving around the chess pieces of my insane board.
This might be my choice. The Benchmade 565-1 Mini Freek in S90V. It's lefty friendly, lightweight friendly and ridiculous edge retention.

Possibly my Chris Reeve, small 21, lefty, micarta inlay, double naked thumb stud that I carry in a leather sleeve.
In a survival situation though I'd keep only my Leatherman Wave+'s, full bit set, extender, Nichia emitter torch on the side in extended pouch, but carry in my manbag/murse/bugout bag.

Please don't take this as a flex: I certainly don't at all. I bet anything that many of you would have similar dissections of your accumulations.
Young people: Take it from this older guy in his 50's. Don't do this to yourself. It's stressfull as I downsize. This doesn't include most of my kitchen knives, whetstone/sharpening bin, photography, scuba, camping, fishing, tools, hiking, audio. It feels endless as I pull out bin after bin. This project had multiple goals: help me get this stuff back into the correct bins, photograph for insurance purposes, decide what to list for sale, confront myself with my reality.

This sort of thing can be a real burden on those left behind. Not to be morbid, but I'm trying to get a handle on this for my heirs. :p

Wait a moment. This is after the down-sizing, right ?

:)

I would need at least two: a fixed blade and a folder. Would be CPK UF[12], and as folder a large Wharncliffe, probably my XM24 or Kuros.

The weight of years of accumulation doesn't have to translate into pounds and ounces. There is a... mental weight that comes with the time spent researching, acquiring, experiencing, noticing things you're dissatisfied with, and then re-searching for "better". For some lucky ones, they find The Thing that allows them to stop, whether it's a knife, pen, watch, flashlight (just as dangerous as knives! You've been warned!), wallet, multitool, or, the list goes on and on, as you think to yourself, "This X (fill in with whatever piece of shiny you want) is great, but it needs "Y" to go with it". Then, you need ways to keep X and Y organized in your pocket.

Some of us have trouble parting with our accumulation, because we put so much effort into getting it "just right", at the time. Years go by, tastes, activities, interests, life changes. Still, every time we decide to clear out some of this, we're not stopped by any intrinsic value of the items, we remember the satisfaction we felt when we got it "just right".

I don't count multitools in these "only X knife" threads, because I make a psychological distinction between the two.

Of the knives pictured, I suppose the Forum Consensus would be either the PM2 or the CRK.

Personally, I would take the William Henry over any of the others. I like being different, sometimes for no other reason than to be different.

I think the Buck 110 is the most practical choice of all though. I'm biased against frame- and linerlocks, because I've been able to get one to unlock with plain old grip pressure. Yes, it was my fault, that's not the point: I want some larger margin of safety than I feel while using either of those locks.

If you are in a situation where you can carry a fixed blade as your everyday, then I would like to see more of the one with the paddle clip on it's sheath. Not the Cold Steel, the other one.

Also, I'd like to hear more about that big flashlight.

Wait. No. I don't need another flashlight. I don't need another flashlight. I don't need another flashlight.....
Haha. The light is one of many excellent options out there. About $55 delivered off AliExpress. Maybe there's something better now but it's 3800 lumens, XHP70. I use it for bump in the night sweeps. It floods nicely.

Extremely well put. I would add that some items are gifts received or even given. Hard to part with for me as well. Or broadly speaking: sentimental. I have my deceased mother's Rolex. I purchased long distance for her 50th, had the manager pick up 2 dozen roses, take to her office and size it. I'll be giving that one to the youngest daughter. 🥰

Oh, Convoy! Those are well-regarded over on the forum about candlepower.

This is actually helpful to me. I have a big 'ol Coast light that does flood, just fine. So, I really don't need a Convoy L6. And now, I can happily say that I don't have to worry about wanting it, either.

Aside: I recently sold my BLF GT (Giggles) The gigathrower. Insane light with absolutely no practical use to me whatsoever. Throw of 1.3 + miles. Ridiculous light. I was in on the Budget Light Forum build from the start.

Yeah, that ain't that much stuff. But if you feel overburdened, just send me that William Henry box with whatever's in it. Hey, I'm here to help.

Before my dad passed away, he had me and my two brothers over to the house to drink some beers and "discuss" stuff.

He handed each of us an envelope with $5000 in it, and told us that he was hereby holding an auction for all of his stuff.... his vehicles, guns, chainsaws, property... the works.

The winning bidder had to give half of the winning amount to the two brothers... if I won an item for $2000 I gave each brother $1000 and the auction continued.

It took us a couple hours and a case of beer. But in the end, we all knew which brother got which item and that was that. Dad even wrote the winning items on a sheet for future reference.

Worked like a charm. When the time came we all gathered up the stuff that was "ours". The rest went into a 20 yard dumpster.

I'm gonna do the same with my kids when the time comes. But I'm gonna trim the rest of this crap down so that the unwanted stuff fits in a 55 gallon drum.

I think it's best to figure out which stuff goes to which kid while we are alive. Maybe sounds morbid, but it was one of the most sensible family discussions we ever had.

I agree with you OP. There is a major cost that comes with stuff. Not just in dollars but in time, effort and a mental factor that is very hard to explain. As someone who had parents that had a lot of stuff it absolutely can be a burden to someone else. It doesn't look like you have too much stuff but downsizing certainly comes with a mentally freeing factor. It's hard to explain but there is real truth to the stuff you own ends up owning you for a lot of people. There is an entire series on TV called hoarders that addresses this very concept when taken to the extreme end. Just one knife seems too extreme for me. A large insigno is a top contender. spyderco drunken (wish they made it in other steels), and spyderco mule. If I only get one I might want a fixed blade but I'd have to consider which one.

very intelligent!

I’m doing the small thing you are now. I’m 52 and clearing stuff out. Just from your pics though I probably have about 10 times as much stuff though. Geez where did it all come from. Photography, astronomy, guns, fishing, knives, backpacks, 3 big totes of holsters. Crazy what I’ve accumulated.

I have been watching the classifieds though and plan on snagging a small CRK just to have 1 edc.

Oh who am I kidding, I started selling knives a couple weeks ago and have already bought 7 since I’ve sold those 8:)
