Because it is the same shape as the spout that gets put into a bottle to pour with!:D

The Scotch Dispenser is remarkably comfortable, very secure, and easily concealed!!!

That would be my guess

because it is great for cutting the foil, or tax stamp sticker on Johnny Walker Blue!

See the way it's laid across the top of the bottle like a pour spout?
there is your clue....

Yeah - Jerry made the pattern by tracing a Scotch Tape dispenser.

Since that answer's already been taken, I'll guess that the ring is sized to act as a foil cutter for Johnny Walker bottles, and the second finger divot can be used as as sort of wrench for those stubborn corks.

It's for a Scottish military unit.
They use it to dispense with the enemy.

remarkably comfortable, very secure, and easily concealed = sgian dhub

The handle shape was traced from the impression left on your forehead when you passed out and slept on a tape dispenser that was sitting on your desk?

The finger groove behind the big hole looks like the same size as the neck of bottle....could use it to steady the bottle when pouring...esp when your shakey from lack of scotch. Then again that might just get ya cut!

Is it because you can turn it on it's spine and use indentation in the very end to place the neck of the bottle and assist a drunken hog in pouring another shot? And then place the ring around the neck of the bottle to keep the knife nice and handy for the next shot? And then, strictly as a bonus, if you're really drunk and can't get the bottle to stand up on the table, or you can't get the ring around the neck, you can place the neck of the bottle in the middle indenttion/grip section and lay it down to rest peacefully until the next shot.

That would make me feel comfortable, very secure....and it's sure nice you can take it anywhere with you.

I think the answer is that it looks like a scotch tape dispenser too, but I'll go in another completely wrong direction and guess it was made for a scottish military order which specified that it be concealable and comfortable in either the standard or reverse grip. It's main intent would have been as a last resort to "dispense" with the enemy. The ring was to aid in retention when the H2H got Hot and heavy.
