You can't do THAT with a ZT...

According to current wisdom, you can't fell a tree with a folding knife, and a Zero Tolerance would certainly explode, right?

Let's find out. :)

So yeah, that was weird...I still have all my fingers, and the knife didn't explode.
It's almost like the internet experts got it all wrong yet again. ;)

Now, if that had been a Gerber, I'd have believed you. They stay sharp pert near forever.

No one said ZTs are weak knives or that lock disengagement problems were common.

If your knife was made correctly then you're good to go. The concerns expressed by those who have experienced & seen ZT frame and liner locks disengage easily is not directed at the overwhelming majority of knives whose locks do just fine in hard use or even abuse. It's directed at the amount of knives with locks that do have a problem. The success of your particular knife does not nullify other knives' failures, nor do other knives' failures nullify the success of your particular knife.

As a side note I batoned the Benchmade 530 and Kershaw Thermite through multiple trees in an identical manner about a year ago. Neither sustained damage, developed blade play, or unlocked during use.

You know that only worked because you had something in front of the blade - blocking it - every time you whacked the spine. If that tree hadn't been there, you would definitely be missing fingers because ZT framelocks are inferior....and....and....and....because ZT knives aren't up to hard use.
:) ;)
Note the smiley and wink - since it seems people can't tell when I'm joking. Lest there be any doubt...I'M JOKING!!

I chose that tree because it was the same diameter as the length of the blade; seemed a good guess for about the maximum size that could be done.
The edge held up really well also.

Of course, the most harrowing part was the night-time walk out with all those dangerous toads...you can see the one holding me in place with its might pressed against my boot!
I'm surprised we managed to get out alive. ;)

Or at least without a raging case of warts. Terrifying!

WOODMAN, spare that tree!
Touch not a single bough!
In youth it sheltered me,
And I ’ll protect it now.

NOPE. TOO LATE.
Next time, might suggest to unlock the blade before batoning...ostensibly to spare the battering of the lock.
It's hearsay, but sounds about right.
...and yeah, ZT's are tough.

On a smaller diameter tree or limb, that would work.
On one of this diameter, not so much.

Besides, this was more a test of the knife's robustness. :)
In general, I tend to use a fixed blade knife for woods work, and most fire wood comes from the ever-increasing amount of deadwood from storms (green wood doesn't burn very well anyway).

But if a tree or two extra falls, I plead the "Beaver defense."
In a recent article regarding beaver activity on Peche Island, a biologist was stating how any trunk too large for the beavers to move ends up decomposing and helping the forest with nutrients returning to the ground.

Hence, I am good for the environment in the same way as the noble beaver, that most Canadian of animals. ;)

I wouldn't do that with a toad! :D

Great, so you did it with your ZT. What about the ones that failed on other people?

Personally I feel these spine whack test to be silly....IMHO, they prove nothing.

Not sure I believe most of those cases are real anyway.
People say lots of things that aren't true.

Wow, now that's some faith in humanity. No reason at all to disbelieve someone yet it doesn't fit into your mold so you call them liars. :barf:

Lots of people lie.
They lie about all sorts of things.
"No, I didn't steal that."
"Oh course I did not have sex with that woman."
"Of course your stories are interesting."

I'm not calling individual people liars by name...I don't know them.
But if they're human, there's a huge chance they are liars.

That's just a fact of existence one has to deal with, and barfing emoticons do not negate the truth of it. ;)

Sure it is buddy, whatever makes you happy to think.
Go report it if that makes your day better.

ROFL

Thanks for the laugh. That just made my night!

Sweet thread BTW

IBTL?
