You collect knives and you don't have a Douk-Douk?!? Story, facts, fun, adventure!

I don't quite understand how improving the function and convenience of a knife is "ruining" it - but then, I primarily see knives as tools to be used, and it's my understanding that not everyone on BF views them the way I do.

Lol, I hear alot of knife collectors refer to knives as 'tools' all the time. Clearly they are more than just tools to the majority of members here, otherwise you'd only have one or two and wouldn't bother showing them off and talking about them.

And personal interest in such things leave personal tastes, and these knives tickle the taste of us who like simple knives, with buckets of history. Adding all the crap that comes with modern knives to such a lovely traditional minimalist design would simply ruin it from a collectors point of view and be a waste of time from the 'tool users' practical point.

Thanks to this thread (specifically Alex17), I just had to have a Douk-Douk. So I ordered a small and a large. :D I like simple, I like history, and have always dreamed of being in a secret society of masked avengers. Anything that gets me closer to that dream is a no brainer.

Perhaps I can dress as a Douk-Douk for Halloween this year. I just hope we don't have any Melanesian immigrants in our neighborhood or I might give them quite a scare. Somehow I don't think Minnesota is a hot bed for immigrants from Oceania though, something to do with our weather...

BTW, I also like the silly engraving.

Tools eh? So, OOC, what work do you use your Cold Steel tantos for?

I like mine, fun little knife, its just a little scary to close, you really have to make sure your fingers arent in the way, it closes pretty quick.

OOC? There's no need to get insulting. I simply stated my opinion.

The fixed blade Tantos I keep as weapons in case of SHTF. The folders, I EDC. For certain kinds of work, their shape is excellent.

Lol, if the shtf a knife isn't going to save you. An umbrella might, though! :D

I think it's fair to say on a forum like this, where lots knife collectors come together to be nerds with one another, we should leave the 'a knife is a tool' bs at home. Lol, my hammer is a tool, and why I only have a few that I actually need and don't bother talking about them or taking pictures to show them off.

Now, back to what's important, Douck Douks! :)

I'll be sourcing one or two from France soon, with any luck and I'll be sure to do a run down on my inepth thoughts on these badboys!

(OOC? out of control..?)

If you're seriously worried about "SHTF", get a freakin gun. You aren't Jason Statham in the Expendables, carrying several tantos a)isn't really gonna be what you want to stake your life on, and b)aren't gonna be nearly as useful as for general survival as a more multipurpose knife. Or do you think you're gonna be like Arnold in Commando, and walk around with like 6 guns and 4 knives strapped to your body?

Seriously, if you're legitimately concerned with SHTF, and(unlike many people who use that phrase) aren't just some tacticool kid thinking he's hardcore cause he has some tantos and a Glock, get a knife that will be a LEGITIMATELY useful tool(since, as you said, that's what your knives are) in that situation, not a tanto. Claiming you only buy knives as tools, while owning multiple tantos is like me claiming I'm opposed to guns, while stripping and cleaning my 8 pistols.

For all douk douk lovers, find below a link of exclusive one,you can find them only there,it s an exclusivity between M.C Cognet and Akeron. i buy them quite of often as present for my friend ,who does not owne a knife.by the way, this shop is amasing,it s the best one in paris, open since 1875,the best place for french knife lovers.

I've enjoyed this one for a few years. Doesn't get as much pocket time as it should but ounce for ounce it does what I need it to do as reliably as other knives that cost 20x as much.

Thank you OP. Just got an Opinel 8 and a Douk Douk for gentle men's carry. Usually I'm out in just work jeans. but going to start carrying my Buck or the Douk Douk for suited up occasions. Just also got one for my grandfather.

These hold no interest for me at all. For one thing, the flatness of it is a complete turnoff. I like a grip to fill my hand. That said, I appreciated and enjoyed the OP's obvious enthusiasm for them!

Edit: Just saw that the OP's been banned. Ouch!

Today I received one of these from my awesome brother as a christmas present! He also bought me a much more expensive, and much needed bench grinder, but I was way more excited about the Douk-Douk! It's the sorcier pattern (blued handle), but I don't know whether it's the large or small one since I have no tools with me to measure the blade. I've spent most of the day doing research and trying to learn more about these knives, and this thread is by far the most extensive English-language link I've come across. I'm actually shocked that these knives aren't more widely owned (and discussed online) within the English-speaking world. Especially considering how popular some non-locking knives such as Opinels are among knife collectors. I'm rather impressed with how ridiculously strong the back spring is on these knives; the only knife I've owned which was more difficult to close was my CS AK-47 (which has since had the lockbar stripped of its finish to remedy that problem.) This is a truly unique knife which I will always treasure, despite the fact that the lack of lock and pocket clip, and the carbon steel blade, are the exact opposite of what I typically prefer in a pocket knife. Every knife collector should have one of these in their collection.

Had mine for nearly a year now I think. Although I wasn't impressed when it turned up due to my picky nature, I slowly warmed to it over a week or so. The things that really started to change my mind were the absolute complete lack of any blade play, lovely easy steel, strong back spring with half stop, slim and sleek, light weight, strong and rustic!

It's now one of my favourite knives, and I pick between only a few to keep in my pocket regularly, and this is one of them.

Not the best whittler though, gives some real hand pain after some time and a heavy duty session on the harder woods, but that's due to the slim handle.

Is this the knife Bugdoc was asking about in the Traditional forum the metal handle knife thread? Tried to post a link there but failed, sorry!
