You get one Benchmade, which one?

921 Switchback is the pick of your price range. It feels slick, but it's not. It looks dainty, but it's not. In my opinion (which appears humble, but it's not :) ), it's their best folder ever.

I think your requirements were for heavy, EDC use. The new 520 fills the bill beautifully. The classic dropped point blade shape is useful for almost anything and the handle is one of the best-designed I have ever seen. You can "white-knuckle" this thing all day long with no problem. IMHO, this is one of the best folders BM has ever come out with and I am pretty sure it's going to be a major, big seller.;)

No knock on the 710, which I also think is one of the best production folders out there.

I like the 940. I used it a lot harder than I thought I would and it has held up great.

710 is too big for me most days. I'd have to put up another recommendation for a 94X series. Personally I love my 941D2CF and carry it all the time(well, quite often, can't leave the Microtechs at home all the time)but that new Ti handled 941 has really got my attention. Osborne created a real winner in the 94X series.

Well, I'm carrying a BM-31 and I have a 42SS on order, so I'll say a bali. In addition to being super cool, the lock is practically failsafe and despite being a little thicker than I would like, the weehawk blade on my 31 takes a mean edge. I can't wait til I get the 42SS in D2, it'll be a real treat.

So far, here is how it's shaping up.

Tough. Nice handle shape and material. Nice blade geometry. The nicest of the Axis locks IMHO. Cool name. I'm just in love with it.

If I could only have one...my 710,but I find myself carrying my 942 just as much.

Yam, I am unsure how you get to one vote for the 921 as I count three, Lion Haert, thombrogan, and myself. And I was hte one who said that the 921 had just pulled up equat to my much loved StarMate. Clearly, I do not carry a knife for tactical or "heavy duty" reasons, since people seem to define knives such as the Chinook or the 710 as the heavy duty knives and don't seem to consider anything smaller as qualifying.

FullerH,

Thanks for the heads up...I read my notes wrong, I made the change. I'm glad someone's paying attention around here! ;)

Tactical doesn't mean much to me. I mean, any knife that cuts is a weapon. Heck, I can hurt you pretty badly with a Bic pen, so the "tactical" knife definition I'm still trying to sort out. I look at knives more as everday tools. I'm thinking along the line of tough as being able to handle dirt, grime, cutting radiator hoses, big thick rope, heavy cardboard.....take some abuse in the not-a-knife-task category (like a bit of prying, just a tiny bit). Something that has a good handle and can hold an edge fairly well.

941, 941ti-01 if you want the best folder benchmade has ever put out. This thing is absolutely incredible and amazing. For those of you waiting for it, salivate more than you already are, it truly is worth it.

720; baby tank, stout, solid low blade, strong penetrating clip point, great for working with gloves on as well.
