A very close second would be the Ares 730, about the smoothest Axis lock I've felt.

I agree. Although I would pick another flavor of 730... the 733-01 with the S30V steel.
 
I'm very happy with my 720. Solid, well-made, smooth, etc, almost perfect except for the metal handle, which is fine now that I've added some grip-tape on the backstrap.
If you're in a cold, wet environment, you might want to consider the 721, which is G10 instead of aluminum. BM's website says they're discontinued, but probably still a bunch around.
