You get one fixed blade for the rest of your life what is it?

Far all around knife i would go with my straight handle Busse Steel Heart 2.

What a horrible thought!!! I'd go with a "puuko" from one of the excellent Scandinavian manufacturers.

Welcome to BladeForums, Palle.

For those who don't recognize Palle Thorndal's name, Palle makes Nordic knives in Denmark.

I have visited Palle's site several times in the past year.
In My Humble Opinion, Palle makes the ultimate Nordic knife.
He also makes a lot of variations on the theme and keeps his prices in reach of the working man.

In a production knife, I would go with the Fallkniven Hunter.
In a custom knife I would choose one of Palle's Nordic knives because I could wear it just about anywhere.
Very strong, beautiful and hand-friendly knives.

I checked out Ed Fowler's site, too.
I hadn't seen his work before.
Thanks to all for alerting me to him.
Very practical looking designs.
I couldn't find Ed fowler's Prong Horn which several people have mentioned.

That I own at the moment a Ka Bar D2 knife.

That I have on order a 10" 10V Spearpoint custom.

Otherwise a Busse BM-E.

In a smaller blade a BM Nim in M2.

Ken, I didn't know Ed Fowler had a website, if you have a URL for that I'd love to see it?

This is the best link I have to Ed's "Prong horn".

Like Hoodoo, I'd go for Bob Dozier's Professional Guide's Knife. Don't have mine yet, but I'm getting there.

PhilL, I found Ed Fowler's site in BladeForum's links under Custom Makers.
Thanks for the photo of the Prong Horn.
It sure looks good in the hand.
The photo also makes the differential heat treatment very clear and obvious.
I wonder if one could call those lines a hamon as in the Japanese sense.

Speaking of good in the hand, did anyone check out Palle Thorndal's site, or the Knut Dahl link Palle provided?

We Americans have grown so accustomed to hilts and handguards we at first don't feel comfortable with the simple and elegant lines of the Nordic knives.

I will testify, though, that the Scandinavian knives feel very secure in the hand, with absolutely no concern for the hand riding forward onto the blade.

They actually feel much more secure and versatile, allowing a much greater variety of cuts, movements and control.
The higher ratio of grip to blade length also allows tremendous power.

Check out the close-ups of Bjarne Rasmussen's damascus blades at Palle's site.
The Scandinavians have a long history of hand forged damascus, for both aesthetic reasons and because it produces a wickedly sharp edge.

Strangely, like the Japanese, the Scandinavians have a tradition of one man hand-forging the blade and then the actual knife-maker assembling the components and shaping them into a finished knife.

A HUGE amount of knife in a very small package.

'nother vote for Dozier ProGuide.

Bob made me one with Ivory Micarta / Maroon insert handle. It's beautiful, not too big, not too small, and it cuts stuff. (Thanks Brian.)
