You guys happy with your Umnumzaans?

This thread needs some pictures......

Even after 2+ years the wear from constant carry on this knife is only made obvious when it's seen next to a new knife. The blasted finish actually hides marks and scuffs quite well. My knife has been through a few damaging drops, had the clip bent right out of shape, been in the sea, through mountain rivers, used in MA training, cut a vast amount of stuff from letters to food to wood to cans and even my hand and still functions exactly the way it did the day I got it. :)

Opening these things are a breeze compared to a Seb, but the closing starts to hurt after a while... I guess I should just cut the amount of unnecessary openings to only like a 1000 a day :)

Sweet!! The lockbar is a little stiff new but it will break in after a week and be effortless to close.
Love that SNG too. I have the same setup but with digicam blade. I think your about set with those
two knives :)

The Umnum is w/out a doubt one of my favorite folders. You made a good blind purchase!:D

My first-ever CRK - a WC StarTac 'zaan - arrived 9/10. I've since added a Nyala and a small Sebbie - really like the pair of them... but I love the 'zaan - my favorite. Never open bags-o-chips with it - some bills - blister packs - mailers - etc. It is, after all, just a 'pocket knife'! Okay, it's a darn nice and quite expensive one, but it is a pocket knife. I bemused myself one day as I cut pepperoni with it... a little soap and water on that blade, and it was good as new. Wiped it off after cutting an apple one nite while watching the tube - my wife saw me, too. Oops - thought she'd flip at my soiling my pants leg wiping the blade off... nope, she wanted to know why I was using my $400 knife to cut an apple. I straightened her right out - it cost $430!

I've had my Umnumzaan for just over two months now, and it's my main EDC. I love the way it feels in the hand, and it's a better slicer than my old Seb (which I also love). I never had any problems with opening it, but used to have pain in the thumb from unlocking. Now my thumb has developed a bit of a callous on it, and I've gotten the technique to closing it down, so it's no longer an issue.
Mine always rides in a CRK belt pouch when I'm out, and I usually keep it somewhere close by when I'm at home. I'm still not sure how long the polyurethane O-rings will last, but that doesn't seem an issue either. This has definitely become my favorite knife.

Used to own a Hinderer 3.5" XM-18. Sold it and now use my Zaan as the hard use folder. Use it quite a bit in the back yard to cut branches and pretty much anything else. Butter smooth and the lock up is perfect.

My startac umnum kicked the large sebenza out of my pocket a while ago. Im really liking it, maybe more than my large!

Is this normal? I'm talking about the lockbar position relative to a new one. Will this affect resale? I'm kind to my knives usually... I even avoid hitting the dinner plate when eating with it haha.

The pivot is a tiny bit more more loose but it's loctited down in that position and I can thumb flick it open like any Benchmade out there... there is still no play in any direction of course. No wrist flick, just pure thum

Please excuse me if I sound dumb I've always opened Sebenzas slowly and I'm pretty experienced with folding knives.

The action isn't glass smooth like a Sebenza either, it feels a little more "textured" since there is a detent on this...

All in all it's a diceroll which between the two working knives is better, I'm just glad that there is an alternative to the Sebenza out there for people who like blades with attitude.

Perfectly normal for an umnumzann. Because the lockup contact point is the ceramic ball the lock up should be late for the ball to contact at around 50%. As far as the action goes if you haven't taken the knife apart to clean and relube than do that and you should feel a difference.

Yeah my lockup looks exactly the same. It hasn't moved in (conservatively) ~5000 openings.

The Umnum (hell, all CRK knives) is badass. :)

Yes, still happy. Had an early 2009...sent it on for the ergos back then, just replaced it. The new ones are a more polished knife IMO, and a great knife.

AHHH THATS WHY! :)

Makes complete sense now since the ball is somewhat smack middle of the lockbar and the bar would have to go in much more to get 50% actual lockup!

Oh that and the lockbar moving in so much contours better to my hand anyway... you know since the ball is the only thing touching... that doesn't make this the stronger design of the two does it? I mean if we're talking nickels and dimes here wouldn't the full tang contact bar of the Sebenza be ideal?

I don't use the wrong end of my knives so it will never be an issue but we're just talking physics and engineering

Interesting! How do you like the Umnum v/s the Hinderer, any specific contrasts/comparisons?

Yes very interesting indeed. I've sold my Sebenzas and kept my XM-18s & 24s. You know though, I really miss the precision of the large Sebenza and have been struggling with the thought of selling off an XM-18 to finance a micarta inlay lg Sebbie.

The mic. inlays look so cool, I wonder if they feel better in the hand than a naked or "plain jane" Sebbie which feels great too. I love being able to slam open my flippers easily and the heft of the Hinderer, but that perfect fit and click (clack) when the Sebenza engages really turns me on.

Funny how a simple little thing like that, about a folder will stand out in your mind. :)

Nice, well built knife but didnt love it like the Seb, guess the Seb just set the bar so high for me. But I might get another in the future. The titanium scales, texture, design and over ruggedness feels awesome. I didnt really like the design of the glass breaker sticking out and the overly large pivot, also no click when engaging the lock which I love on the Seb. No doubt though its still nice piece to have in the collection.
