The first Umnum I held was a friends prototype, I was immediately unimpressed with it; just like I was with the first Sebbie I laid fingers on.
Just like the Sebbie swayed my disdain( as it wasn't tacticool ) to absolute lust, so has the Umnum.
At first I was put off by the "barb" on the spine of the blade, thought that it was too sharp of an edge to be exposed when closed. I didn't care for the oversize pivot since all of my sebenza's( even the hard use one's ) have faired well through everything that I could throw at them; I also didn't like the idea of needing a special tool or having to loci tite the pivot. And most of all I didn't care for the ceramic ball being the contact point for the lock bar, it seemed like a weaker design than my trusty sebbie's and I found that it could ever so slightly flex vertically.
Being that I lust for any CRK with a tanto point I immediately purchased the tanto Umnum when it was introduced, I figured that it would sit in the safe and occasionally be fondled and put away.
BOY WAS I WRONG!
Not only was it a beauty but it is an amazing knife! I put it side by side with my large regular and found that the ergo's are surprisingly similar, I also found that it ended up knocking my small insingo out of my pocket which I thought would never happen.
The lock up on my umnum hasn't moved a millimeter in countless thousands of openings and it's as smooth as ever, even smoother than when it was new. I only took it apart once to clean, lube, and set tension shortly after I bought it and the blade is still perfect with no movement or wiggle. After well over a year of daily carry and use it shows a lot of character but would still look new after a trip to the spa. It gets used for everything from opening letters and trimming finger nails to breaking down boxes and preparing food( after a good cleaning of course ). After a light touch up on a ceramic rod it holds the title of the sharpest damn knife that I've ever laid hands on, and it holds it's edge for a pretty long time.
I'm still not a fan of the standard blade but often consider purchasing one to be proved wrong yet again by another well thought out CRK design, I couldn't be happier with my Umnum and believe it to be one of my best knife purchases of all time. I don't think I'll find anything to knock it out of my pocket, but if I do I bet that it'll have CR stamped somewhere on it.
Just wish that I could get a sweet Star Tac handle with a sexy tanto blade, now that'd be sexy!
Enjoy your new knife, it's one of the best around in my opinion.
