I'm getting a $500 Visa gift card from work for my 7 year anniversary. I really like the Hinderer XM-18 3.5" and the Hoback OSF. Which one would you choose? Or do you have something better in mind?

I like the OSF...but don't want a blacked out knife - enough so that I have resisted the temptation. I already have an XM18 (3.5").
So I'd pick something else.

Love the XM so my choice is biased. Only knife id pay that kind of money for. You wouldn't be disappointed with it

I would do the XM.

I’ve owned 5 Hoback knives and the f&f has been hit or miss. Also they use thick blades which inspire confidence but if you ever see one taken apart the pivot area of the tang is missing a lot of material which means it isn’t as robust a knife as you would think. It’s just an extra thick blade that cuts poorly and isn’t as robust in construction in reality as the XM.

Also I’ve owned 15 or so XM18’s and really like them a lot lol

Hinderer Gen 5 3.5"XM18 Sheepsfoot--that's what I'd get. If you don't like it, I'll send you my shipping address. :p

Red G10 would be nice, BTW.

Depends on if it will be a user or collectable. I've had several Hinderer, Strider, Medford, Diskin, Reeves etc in the collection but never were used, most are gone in favor of fixed blades. For daily use I discovered the Dpx hest folder in niolox steel and wouldn't trade it for anything, four years and only had to sharpen it once, use it everyday. Good luck in the search it's always fun buying.

Between those two, XM-18 Gen 5. Between Hinderer and Hoback, I'd throw in ~150$ of my own dollar and get a CKF/Hoback Kwaiback. Overall I would most likely get a Reate either a K-1 or a New Torrent in Blue or Bronze and have some money leftover.

My vote is Hinderer xm-18. Definitely should try one if you have never tried.

For me, since I already have two xm-18s, my next hinderer will be Eklipse harpoon spanto.

Ding ding ding this is a winner right here. Need the sheeps myself the blade choice is amazing. Spanto and Skinner is what I have but if you were getting one XM for sure go Spanto

XM is a fine knife if you need something that robust, but personally think a large Sebenza makes a better user and EDC, for cutting tasks. So if I could just buy one knife that would be it.
But that is just my opinion and based on my tastes

I voted for the Gen5 Hinderer given the choices posed by the OP, but didn't really consider the "something else". As much as I love my RHKs and totally covet a Gen5 Sheepsfoot, if I could have only one knife for my 5 bills, I'd have to go in the direction Peter chose. Large 21 or Large Inkosi, Micarta inlayed, and either drop-point or Insingo.
