What if you had a badass small, hardened, edged scraper with a nice lanyard hole, tied to your steel?
Yeah, you'd have to rethink the classic firesteel loop, but if you have a pouch sheath or carry a tin of some kind it will drop right in. If you somehow manage to lose your striker and not your steel, then you can use the knife edge anyway. After all, it will be a TRUE emergency. For all other uses, like camping, practice, messing about, you just use the dedicated scraper and save wear and tear on your knife AND thumbs.
Fer instance, imagine this minus the secondary convex edge bevel, leaving about 0.025" of a squared 'edge' with two sharp angles:
