My dad likes knives and bought me my first at age 7, not as much as I do but he does like knives and has a small box of them.
Because of this I was telling him I ordered a new knife when he asked me " what did you order now ", I told him I ordered a Case I've been wanting and then he asks " how much did that cost you ".

I know exactly where this is going ;)

I told him it was $51.97 shipped and he looks at me and says " that's too much " , I said he just doesn't think any knife is worth that much.
Then he said " well let's see this knife you spent too much on " so I show him a stock photo of the Case small Texas jack in Amber jigged bone and CV, and he looks at it then says " oh I like that, that's real nice looking ".

After seeing it he's more understanding of the price, but he's 60 and is still just used to what knives used to cost.
That is to say that he hasn't spent more than $25 on a knife in over 20 years, since his original GERBER MP he bought in the mid 90's the most I know of him spending on a knife was $20+shipping for his Vic tinker a couple years ago.

I'm sure we all know someone like this, for one reason or another they just don't feel exactly the same as you do about knives.

Maybe their only knives are in the kitchen , they carry one but don't give them much thought , or maybe they do like knives but don't know the difference in quality.
Maybe like my dad they love knives, they can at least spot total garbage when they see it, but are either cheap or just have sticker shock with regards to what they cost today.

We know a 360° likely won't happen easily, but if they at least carry a knife we can maybe light a small spark.
Maybe we get them to try a few different ones, open their eyes to at least slightly better knives, or get them to understand that knives are worth today's inflated prices.

Not only do I know someone like this, I am someone like this!
And it's not like I don't have the money, although I have a relatively small budget for knives. But I typically enjoy 5 $20 knives more than I would 1 $100 knife.

Pretty much my whole family think somethings wrong with me because of my "knife addiction". But I must say my impulse buying has gotten better, sometimes I'll wait a whole day or two before I pull the trigger on that special blade.;)

oh, and Congrats on 7k post GT.

Well I know a couple people who say "you paid what!?" But I've been very blessed in finding some real gems at crazy low prices from their normal cost. I tell them what I paid, then show them knives on the bay, or some other means what its current value is. Then they're reaction is usually "THAT much money for a little old pocket knife!!?? THATS crazy!" Lol but they usually congratulate me on finding one at a low price. So sometimes its a matter of perspective.

I completely understand, personally I can't justify a significant expense for things that don't bring additional or better function.

For example , Alox looks great but doesn't cut better than Cellador so I'm still not ready to take the plunge.

Until about a year ago, I don't think I'd ever spent more than $20 on a knife. But like with anything, you get what you pay for. I never spend less than twice that now, and sometimes significantly more.

My dad was the same. He did get excited when I gave him the Buck whittler package (knife, two-sided stone and oil) and later a Leatherman.

I bought my dad a leatherman ST300 this last Christmas and he uses it every day at work.
He told me he saw the $79.99 at the local hardware where I bought it, only this time all he could say to me was " it's a great tool ".
I know he still would not have payed what it costs , but the reason I bought it for him is because I knew it's the only way he would get back to using a quality multitool again.

There are a lot of high value traditional users in this price range, but It's an easy mark to pass for sure.
Under up to $50 before shipping is still budget territory though.

Do you have the outdoor channel ?
If you do , you've seen the commercials with Larry potterfield the founder of Midway USA.
Him mentioning all the types of guns or knives they sell , how there's one for this or than and you can't have just one.
Then his wife walks in asking him " just how many does one man need " as they not so sublty focus in on the fancy looking and likely expensive shoes she's wearing which are different in every commercial.

Maybe others can learn to understand and stop questioning you, but that doesn't mean they jump on the bandwagon.
Buy them a knife and they may love it , appreciate the quality, and understand why it costs what it does, but if they loose it they still wouldn't spend the cost to replace it no matter how much they loved it.

I guess understanding and really " getting it " are not the same thing.

I'm just a bottomfeeder at heart. I have lots of Case knives - I paid $30-40 for most in my collection, some quite a bit more, some even less ... I can honestly say, Nothing like getting a solid knife with full, but slightly corroded blades on the cheap that everybody else passed up only because it needed a little elbow grease to bring it back to like new condition - those are the ones I hold in highest regard.

Yes, but I can get some nice Case knives for $50 or even a little less, and they are a good value. Victorinox too. There are a lot of knives I'd like in the $80 to $150 dollar range. I know there are those who think nothing of spending $500 or more, but I'm not there yet. Probably never will be. Lots of good stuff under $200.

Don't forget purses!

I've given my dad GEC, S&M file and wire, Cold steel large Voyager and Black Rhino, Kershaw, Condor Knife and tool, and others.

He thinks nothing about buying a quality gun and quality scope.....but not nice knives.... now, he does have his old bucks, and Old Timers, and one custom. Fighter in stag.

He has given me knives, guns, multi tools, and camping gear.... so he is not adverse to buying decent stuff. He just has his old, but well cared for users...

He knows I will usually have 2k in knives on me frequently.
