You paid what ?

In 1967 I took home about $39.00 a week working in an A&P store, so I know where he's coming from. It never kept me from buying a nice Case from time to time. Most of us had a pocket knife, maybe a sheath knife if we were hunters, and that was it. I never bought a knife unless I lost one in my younger days.

Yes, but I can get some nice Case knives for $50 or even a little less, and they are a good value. Victorinox too. There are a lot of knives I'd like in the $80 to $150 dollar range. I know there are those who think nothing of spending $500 or more, but I'm not there yet. Probably never will be. Lots of good stuff under $200.
My point was just that there are so many great choices to satisfy me which aren't too expensive.
I think my max is $58 shipped so far on a knife for myself, but I can see how easy it could be to gradually move up with each knife you buy.
I actually remember when my max was $20+ tax and that was at a sporting goods store.

SAK's make the argument. When you can get that much tool with that much quality for under $30. Anything else is really only an aesthetic choice and it's how much you're willing to pay for aesthetics.

Absolutely and they have plenty of charm in their own classic utilitarian way, so for me it's patina they lack.
If they offered a basic carbon steel my head might explode :D

Wow, prices have gone up a bit on those Texas Jacks. I don't have the receipts around (well, I probably do) but I remember them being in the low $30s when I was buying knives a lot - 6 years ago? So normally I'd agree - you paid too much - but I guess that's the going rate now.

The 22087 " Medium jack " which is sometimes called a Texas jack is in the $30 range, whas it the 62032 " Small Texas jack " that was in the $30 range ?.

I would have been happy if they were that cheap, but I think I'll be happy with it for the price.

22087 Medium Jack was usually around $22 or so. 62032 Small Texas Jack was generally $33-ish. Shipping on top of that. That was in the 2013-2014 time period when I was in my buying frenzy. Recession still going on and prices were pretty stagnant back then.

I have two of the CV Small Texas Jacks (one of my few exact duplicates) and two of the SS-version in Sunset Winterbottom Bone, one of which I kept original and the other one I dyed to a nice reddish brown. Definitely one of their better patterns.

It's a question of two relative things: Are you in the know about knife costs? Do you have the available cash?;)

Can be a parental type thing too....decades ago I bought my father a really expensive fountain pen, he loved using it and after a while he noticed what they cost when in a shop. He was appalled and reproached me, but he didn't stop using it  Worth every penny:thumbsup:

Anyway, I think it's kind of rude to ask what things cost;) I adopt a don't ask don't tell posture with people who don't understand knives:D

There is something wrong with us, took me a few years out of the hobby to see it, left the house for the day recently and forgot my EDC so went and bought a < $40 Spyderco to cover, ounce for ounce it's the best knife I now own. :)

Yes, I remember saying and meaning that I would never spend $100 on a knife. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. But.... I do have many cherished knives for which I paid much less. I just bought several MoraKniv's for $10 each and they are GREAT! And, some... that we won't talk about around the Goodwife.

Interesting.

This pattern definitely attracted me, it's very similar to my 33OT which I find to be a great pattern.
It's a little bigger than the 33OT but that's okay.

My wife used to feel this way about GEC until she took the shop tour and saw what actually goes into making them.

My father in law loves knives, but won’t pay a lot for them. He has a whole pile of cheap Chinese neck knives that he’s spent a lot of CUMULATIVE money on, just at $20 a pop.

“The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price has faded from memory.”

Yes, especially when you let features or flashy looks get you.
Put a flashy Damascus steel lockback in the case next to a sodbuster and you can get which one probably sells out quicker.

20 years ago gas was around $1/gallon. It costs considerably more now.

Prices go up over time. Knives are no different.
Yes !!! I pumped a lot of gas for 32.9 cents per gallon and I probably paid $5 and $10 for my first 2 knives .
