My younger sister Calista started making her first knife for a school project. She e-mailed me these pictures of the first day. Looks like she has a great teacher! More to come in the future.

Cool deal Larrin!

What are they using the screw press for, patterning in the blade, or just forging to shape?

Congrats on getting married too! :)

Nick - My father generally only uses the press for patterning damascus. I'd imagine that's what he was having Calista do as well.

Karl - It's the shop of my father, Devin Thomas.

Ahhh

that explains the LARGE hammer (250???)

Thanks Larrin. I haven't seen pics of your dad's shop since KI did a shop tour several years ago.

In the shop tour he had a rare 500# LG, but one of the last times I talked with your dad about it at Ed Schemp's he said something about it being toast. Did the air hammer replace it, or is it just another of his many "toys"? :)

I thought it was a Nazel, but I'm not familiar with the bolts going to the anvil.

The hammer is a 330# Beche. He used to regularly use a 500# Little Giant but the anvil broke from its many years of service. He has a replacement LG but it hasn't been set up yet.

Thanks for sharing the great photos with us...She looks like she is having some fun!
Hope Calista will share more WIP updates!

Thank you!

I can dig it.

Devin is a friend of mine, remember meeting his twin brother (Darren?) after knowing him for over 15 years, and almost getting nauseous because I didn't know that he was a twin....pretty amazing.

NO ONE makes better stainless damascus, and few make better carbon damascus.......everyone has their favorite, and Devin Thomas stainless steel damascus in ladder and raindrop patterns ARE my favorites!

And Larrin is a supremely cool dood!

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

VERY cool. Not many people have that kind of opportunity.

Larrin - your posts are a welcome addition to the forums. Very interesting and great information!

Spirograph damascus is one of my favorites.
