your 2 favorite blade sizes?

LMAO

I guess he doesn't know you very well. If only he had seen a better shot of the entire collection. O, by the way Lil' Foo, what mistress is that with the bad? It's a sweet piece!

Its a Recurve Bowie FBM Proto...
Sent it in to Garth for a few mods.

Yep that's what I thought it was. Pretty sweet, I don't know if I would send mine to Garth though, I'm probably going to send everything else to him :)

Thanks! :)

I sent it off to Garth because I wanted to use it...
I didn't like the false sharpened clip for use with a baton,
wanted canvas micarta versus the G-10,
and I like the red liner for an accent color, etc.

Not sure what you mean about my hands being that big.
These handles are thinner than what came on them originally.
They are about the thickness of mags on a CG with the swells thinned down a bit.

The really nice thing about these recurve protos is that they
weigh about as much as a CG FBM, but have a .320" thickness.
The recurve and the agressive clip point lighten up the knife considerably.

Definitely one of my favorite mistresses. :D

Yea, I don't know how well that hand shaped mag G10 handle would be in real use, I thought you had the same sized handles only in canvas micarta versus and then added the liners, but I just looked and know what you are talking about, that's a great idea if you were going to use it.
Mine is going to sit around and collect dust so not sure about any work being done. Yours sure is pretty though, and by looking at it, is useful.

For backpacking, a Basic 7 and a 3-4" blade folder such as a Carson Model 4, Strider SnG, Spyderco Millie or Emerson CQC7.

For any other camping scenario such as using pack animals or 4WD vehicle to get to the campsite, I'll second PeterPHWS' endorsement of the S5LE, and I like his modification of grinding off the little point above the plunge. Haven't gotten around to modding mine, but here's his:

And the second blade (plus a folder, which I always have on me anyway) would be, hands down, an NMFBM for chopping/batonning/etc. rough chores--much better than any hatchet IMO because it has a much longer "sweet spot" on the blade, meaning you don't have to aim to hit what you're swinging at as with a hatchet, and it's a much more efficient splitter/batonner IMO than a hatchet head:

In a vehicle-camping scenario, I'd also have a machete and an axe to take care of any lighter/heavier chores outside the efficiency range of the NMFBM. IMO, a machete is more efficient for sub-2"-dia. branches, and an axe is welcome on larger stuff like large downed trees across a jeep trail, just because you can use two hands and the longer shaft to land an axe head with a little more "umpff". However, the NMFBM is still useful in these situations if you're without a machete or axe.

Edited to Add: S5LE all the way for day hiking, plus a folder. Replaced my Basic 5 in my daypack. Super light, strong, great utility size and even big enough for light batonning if you need to build a temporary shelter or split some wood for a fire.

Day Hike: S5LE is all I need

Backpacking: Skinny ASH and Vex or Bad Warden

Car/Base Camping: DDF and Vex or Fire Warden

A SOD or SFNO will substitute for the DDF or Skinny depending on circumstances :)
I also take a Leatherman multi-tool backpacking/camping.

NMSFNO
Scrapper 5LE

To me, these are both perfect for their respected uses. Sturdy enough, but still light enough to carry. The S5LE really is about the best backpacking/woods knife I've found.

If you're needing to chop/baton something that you can't with the NMSFNO, (maybe building a longer-term structure is about all I can think of) then I think an axe and a small 5-6" blade are really what should be carried.

I had a BATAC LE, and while it was a great design and an amazing handle, it's just to heavy to be practical to lug around on long walks. I can't imagine carrying around 10" of .25" thick steel.

My first choice is a no-brainer (and no surprise to the regulars here): The Puzzle Heart

I think my second would be the Chicago Badger:

Well this is easy for me as I only have two Busse knives and one sword. I always take my FFBM and NO-E with me. The FFBM just doesn't feel heavy in my pack but then again I'm not doing 20 + miles. It does tend to pants me quite often too. :D However, I find that my NO-E does just about everything I need done.

I'll have to go with my CGFBM and HG55.

I reserve the right to change my mind.

Good to see the kiddies haven't locked you in the broom closet TL.:p

The janitor let me out. :p

After briefly handling Morimoto's CGFBM a while back I think that is a great choice.

compact 9" (custom sar5) and a medium weight 18" (nmfbm. a "heavyweight" 18" would be a 1/2" thick an khola). When I say "compact" I just mean that theres no wasted space in the pommel after the hand when gripping the knife, and as little space as possible between the index finger and the edge while still providing a sufficient gaurd. 9" is a good carry length that doesn't feel heavy on the hip but maximizes usable edge length, keeping it long enough to baton if necessary.

18" is more then enough to baton, gives you enough length to do some machete work, but isn't so long that your hand, forearm, or legs are bogged down by it within the first 5 minutes of use.

If I only had one knife to bring, then it would be the center knife (tank buster), something around 12" in length, preferably with as little wasted space at the pommel and in between the index finger and edge. If I had the time/patience/money I'd probably send this in to have the pommel cut off since I try to avoid hammering (I've sheared off to many scales doing it).

NMFBM for chopping and the heavy work and a AD for all the small stuff.
