Ok knife nuts, here's the scenario: You're walking in the urban jungle at night. All of the sudden some dude jumps out of the shadows and demands your money. You give him your cash but he doesn't leave...maybe he wants to mess with you or your date...this is a life or death deal and, for argument's sake, let's say this dude doesn't have a gun (no use bringin' a knife to a gun fight).

Now, the question: what knife do you wish you had in your pocket?

I'm gonna have to put some contigencies on your choice of blade. I know everyone would say machete or something so here's the deal: This has to be a real world knife. This has to be a knife that you can carry in your pocket or clipped to the inside of your pocket (i.e. it shouldn't be very noticeable). Essentially, this should be an every day carry...something that can double as a letter opener or box cutter when necessary. Automatics are ok since this is a hypothetical situation...no one's really breakin' the law ;)

So, it should be sharp, strong, easy (quick) to deploy, and disappear into your pants or jacket pocket. While I'm at it, let's keep the suggestions limited to current production knives.

My choice (I'm a newbie though, I could be wrong) would be a Desert Knife Works Sandshark. Whenever I think of that thing I think of that video of a guy punchin' holes in a 50 gallon steel drum with one...OUCH!

Lordy, that Desert Knife Works Sandshark looks to be a tough piece of work, compared to a MT UT6.
Where is that video at that you saw?

The Sandshark is almost enough to make me want an OTF, although at $480 it's a bit more than I would want to spend for something I can't legally carry.

Are you SURE that I couldn't whip-out my 10mm Glock and cap the bastid?.:D..:D.

Well, IF I am stuck with just a knife, it would HAVE TO BE
my REKAT Sifu...Of course!.:).

Agreed, it is alot of cash. Then again....check the video out. I sure would hate to be a 50-gal drum :D

I'm with Glockman99 all the way. REKAT Sifu!

Except for work, which has a 4" blade limit, I carry one of my Sifus any time I'm dressed.

Of course, the same applies to my H&K P7. In real life I would go for my Sifu at close range and my P7 for anything else. (Given the way I carry them both, I can present the Sifu faster than the P7.)

Hey, I have to add a third vote for the SIFU, in CF like the one on my computer desk right now.

How about a Pritchard Revolver Bayonet, attached to a Webley Mk VI?

I like the way you think.

Don't do that in NYC, though :D

- ------ ---- ------ -

I used to carry a large Sebenza, in which I still have a great deal of confidence. Now my EDC is a small Sebenza -- not a spectacular looking piece of equipment, but very comfortable in my hand, light and quick, and effectively sharp. Best of all, I am used to always having it with me.

Of course, having just picked up a Commander, I can appreciate THE WAVE !!! especially snapping out of my left front pocket in reverse grip ... awesome blade!

But you don't need much if you know how to use what you've got. If you don't know -- run like a rabbit! I can't run; on the other hand, I usually carry a cane. What knife would be much good against a cane?

Having just discovered Seattle's wonderful knife laws , I've been thinking of carrying a cane when I head back down to The Big City for supplies. I'm wondering, though, if carrying a cane or walking stick may signal "lame victim" to the wrong sorts of people?

What do you mean: no gun? Unarmed?! I wouldn't use a knife unless he was trying to choke me/break something. How are you going to tell the cops you disemboweled an unarmed man? This is why I back up my knife fighting with hand to hand. In fact, the knife is the secondary approach.

In self-defence: inflict alotta pain and run like the wind.
In combat: No one ever wins a fight, some just get to walk away.

No gun - but has a knife?.. the answer to that is simple: anything longer and more solid than what he has.:D True, skill is more important than size, but who here will take their Sifu against Zorro?

You know I handled one of those sandshark out the fronts at TAD a few weeks back and I really wasn't that impressed. The box looks like a coffin and it has bladeplay just like the UT 6, guess im not a fan of out the front autos, i like my knives not to move when i open them. That said, I put another vote in for the waved emerson commander.

no doubt in my mind on this one:

fixed blade? my polkawski/crawford companion for a custom, probably my gerber mark 11 for a production blade, for nostagia if nothing else

folder?? my buck/strider tanto or if the lock works FOR SURE a sifu, and a emerson commander is hard to beat also, and a AR/GB strider folder for a custom, or a crawford/kasper folder of course...imho one of the best around.....

for the $$ imho hard to beat the buck/strider, its built like a tank

but, imho, a glock 32C/33 would be a much better tool for the job lol

Well believe it or not I have been in a similar situation in the city I live in NYS. It was in a parking lot at a major mall. All turned out well though and no one got hurt. There was a group of "kids". I had both a pocket clip folder, and my CCO. Truthfully I didn't even have to present my weapon only push my coat back to present the draw while pushing my wife up against our car with my big butt. I have never seen teenagers scramble to get out of an area so fast. Alls well that ends well. Mall security took a report and it was reported to the local authorities who didn't take a CR. No crime was committed. They did check my CCW though. Which is a good thing. As for using a knife against an unarmed opponent well uless he inflicts some sort of serious damage on you you or your girlfriend/wife, acquaintence etc. you would be well advised to keep it in your pocket. Also know your penal laws when it comes to defending yourself. In NYS you must make every effort to retreat safely before even using dpf. Over the last 5 or 6 yrs in my county there have been 3 incidents if I recall where victims have used dpf with a knife or sword. One was a carjacking that ended well for the victim and not the two perpetrators, one was in the town I live in where the victim was getting seriously beaten by several individuals, and one was a lunatic that had a very sharp Samurai sword that the victims took away from him and cut his arm off with. Far as I know all 3 justified. Just know your laws, know when using a knife or whatever cutting insturment in defense you will definetly be going to jail for probably at least awhile and that you case will justly or unjustly be scrutinized to the tenth degree so to speak. Oh yea as for the scenario mentioned above, well if at all possible I would be running scared, if that failed and I had a choice it would be my CCO, and/or CS Xlg Voyager plain edge. Keep'em sharp

Spyderco Military...Excellent slasher/stabber and highly practical for everyday carry. Not too expensive to replace and one of the best handles out there.

I REFUSE to whip out a knife. if I can take out a knife, I CAN DRAW a FIREARM.........then spray and pray:eek:

What? No mention of the Civilian?

I would actually heed the wisdom of my TaeKwonDo instructor, and kick him hard, then run.
