Especially now in this down economy extra $$$ are in short supply.
What gear have you purchased on the "cheap" that has exceeded
your expectations.

For me it has to be my Mora Clipper ($11) and also my 14" Tramontina Machete ( $6)

Lets hear your bargains....

Probably my $1.00 Led lights from Countycomm(dot)com, And a set of 3 silnylon dry bags at Wallyworld for $6.00

This ia actually a cool topic. I would like to see what everybody comes up with.

It's gotta be the sub $15 Vic Farmers that I got from Amazon.com (with free shipping) or the K & M matchcases at $19.

I bought a 14" deep Lodge dutch oven, a 5" lodge dutch oven, and a snow and neally ax for 35$ at a flea market so that has to be the best so far

I picked up a new stainless steel cup for my nalgene for $5 online. I had the nato issue one, but it was painted and the paint got burned off and the thing rusted.

I bought a 4 piece eagle claw flyrod for backpacking for $35. I was afraid that it would be cheap and want to come apart casting. It's not. You can hardly get it apart when you want to. The reel seat is very good and doesn't keep loosening up. Great action and well balanced too.

Energiser brand 3 AA head lamp available anywhere - 1 red led and 2 whites - with a simple slide switch to go between. $A38 and much cheaper in the US.

Red light for walking without losing night vision (and scaring animals) and use in a car without glaring, and enough white light to do camp tasks, pack cars.

Try finding the expnsive Petzls and so forth with a slide switch to red light ! it may nto be as tough or waterproof, but my first one is still going after a number of trips over several years. Just have to be careful the slide swtich is not knocked on in your pack

Reasonably cheap and very effective

The other is my Gerber LST micro knife $US 19? - small, barely larger than a scalple blade but does 90% of the real cutting tasks needed

Tons of cool gear deals out there. Some favorites that come to mind:

$6 stainless pot with locking lid (~800ml)
$12 Vic Farmer on Amazon (wow)
$1 massive jute twine roll as BigLots

I picked up a SAK driver for 9.95 it is alot like a recruit with a tooth pick and tweezers, and a five pack of Dorcy LED flashlights for 17.99 with batteries, not the greatest lights but good for around the house if the power goes out .

$14 Fiskars 14 inch hatchet.
Buck 119 and Spyderco Co-pilot for $25 total (pawnshop find)
Old Tramontina Carbon steel bowie, 1/4 thick 9.25 inch blade, $5 in a pawnshop
Various old Providence R.I era Imperial carbon Steel slipjoints. $2-$5 per. Actually i got 5 or six in a lot on ebay for around $10. I especially like the stockmans!

I caught some Buck Diamondback fixed blades at the Cabelas website last year for $5.99 each. They were clearing 'em out.

I ordered two of the 3" and one 4.5". I'd have ordered more but I didn't know what great little knives they are. Went to buy more and the sale was over.

Absolute best deal I've ever got was on a Winchester Model 94 AE in .30-30. I was looking for a deer rifle and a friend told me about his brother in law that was in need of some cash (lost his job). He sold it to me for $175 with two boxes of ammo and Weaver scope rings. He sighted it in and put it away. It was like new!

I felt bad so I left him my name and number and told him that if wanted it back once he was on his feet to give me a call. Never heard from him after that.

Of course my wife took it away from me so I had to go get another one. When I brought it home, I believe her exact words were "Nice! Now go get yourself one.":D

Sounds like a nice "wife problem" to have !

My best deals involve firearms. Aside from the guns I won, my best buys were:

Charter Arms .38 snubby, $85

S&W Model 10 Heavy Barrel with ball detent crane and stippled backstrap, $135

S&W Model 12 (dang near mint!) w/ 4" barrel for $165

Camping wise, I picked up 3-4 SOG tools for $15 each off Ebay.
