Your Best Inexpensive Gear Purchase

Probably the best was the Snow Peak cook kit with cutting board and lid for $4 ,and the MSR Ti pot w/lid for $5 from a local second hand store.

Where are you in Kentucky, Spooky? I'm currently a student at WKU, but my home is about an hour north of Bowling Green. God I love this state...

That's cool Frosty, I'm in Lex. Studying pharmacy at UK. I might not have been born in the right time period, but I was definitely born in the right state.

Geez, Mike! What thrift stores are you going to?? I've gotta find some Kentucky versions of that.

ha.. thanks guys...:)

Santa Cruz is a very outdoorsy town.. we have a little of everything here and what we don't have isn't too far away... it is also the home to some amazing athletes..
it is also a college town... with folks coming in from all over.. people got to get rid of their stuff sooner or later...

there are a few really nice thrift stores around...:D i have a few favorites..

Bought a gregory internal frame backpack, looked new 7.00 and a North Face sleeping bag that also looked new 6.00, and this summer a brass svea 123 well used but cared for 10.00. Bag and pack at Goodwill, stove at swap and shop. 23.00 and a great outfit, this probably wouldn't pay the tax on these items. If you wander enough in these places you can find great buys over time. I can't stand not to give these items a home. I also bought a new dog training shock collar 130.00 value for 15.00 works great. Keep looking in these stores frequently it will pay off.

Also forgot the Lodge sportsman hibatchi for 10.00 in mint condition. Would like to find another old school cast iron square one used years ago and turn it into a small forge for making strikers and small heats.

12.00 vic farmers come to mind....

I got a HUGE bag of Fatwood on closeout for 1.99 last spring....

Wally world had SOG tools on sale for 14.99 a couple christmas ago. I bought 2 and gave em as gifts......

For me it has to be 55 gallon drum liners. They are bigger and thicker than trash bags, but light and compact enough to carry a few. They can be used to make ground cloths, sleeping pads, shelters or makeshift rain gear. You can even make cordage by cutting a strip off the open end and twisting it up tightly into a sort of plastic twine.

Over the years, I've made some great buys on gear.

Mora 2000 $12.50 including shipping
Victorinox Hunter $12.00 w/ship
Leatherman tool $5.00 yard sale
Victorinox Camper $5.00 yard sale
Bear Grizzly recurve $25.00 yard sale
Black Widow recurve $15.00 auction
Spark-Lite firestarting kit $6.00 w/ship
Green River skinner $.50
Kelty pangaea shoulder travelers bag $5.00 rummage sale

Back when my daughter was in college (Western Illinois University) whenever I went to visit her, I would always make a point of visiting the pawn shops.(every college town seems to have at least one) My best find was this VERY early Buck 110, marked simply BUCK USA, no date codes at all. When I posted a pic of it on the Buck Forum a while back, the guys there got pretty excited about it, it seems it is a rare one. My cost was $15.

Here is a comparison to a late model 110. You can see the difference in the overall shape.

I haven't purchased it, but an online site (Don't know it by name .. yet) has a pair of Camo Pants on clearance for only $5 bucks!! (Hunting pants)

I just hope they still have some next year around the 21st of January, when I may actually have some money :)

I don;t have alot of great deal stories, but my most recent was a Cabela's sale: a camo
Camelbak MULE for $29!! Ought to be in any day - a Christmas gift for my daughter :D

I would have to say the best deals I've got is all my GI stuff that I still use. I didn't purchase any of it and it's all still holding up well.

But for good deal that I got:
NF Rain coat $50 at Dick's on sale with no liner
Nalgene 50% website deal - I got quite a bit of bottles that day :)

Mike - That's quite a thrift store you've got around you!!!!

Wow, great thread, I'm going out west to go shopping with Mtnfolk Mike!!

-Definately the green handled Moras at Sportsman's Guide, ordered 2 at $9.99 a piece, then they ran them on sale for $9 a piece, I got 3 more. Out of the(5) 3 were the carbon steel blades :D:thumbup: Gave 1 to my son, another to a buddy of mine, guess who has the 3 carbon blades. ;)

- The Becker necker NIB on E-bleh for $30 shipped, "Little Big Knife"

-Many years ago, got an Estwing camp axe at a yardsale, never used, $3.

- Ishapore .308 Enfield Rifle for $64.99 on a 10 person group buy back in the 1990's.

Delica 3 beater with broken tip for $3.00 at Peddler's Mall (flea market) in Louisville. Reshaped it on a bench grinder -first time I'd done that - and it looks somewhat like a Delica 4 now. Now I'm addicted to looking for similar finds.
