Your cheap knife that performs damn well

For a well-made $6 knife that does countless small tasks well, the Victorinox Classic SD is hard to beat. A good compliment to a larger knife.

For really good *inexpensive* knives that I've had experience with...
Victorinox:
Soldier/Pioneer
Tinker or Spartan
Executive
Classic
(really, this goes for any SAK, but these are my faves).

Case:
Sodbuster Jr.

Benchmade:
Monochrome

Buck:
503 Prince

Gerber:
LST (a fairly decent little lockback)

Spyderco:
Dragonfly
Ladybug

I did not include knives that retail over $50 MSRP, because to a lot of people, even that much is too much for a knife. (heck, to some, $25 is a lot).

The much-maligned, but totally cool and useful Gerber Para (3" blade) is always in my pocket. Mine is half-serrated and does what I need a pocketknife to do and looks good doin' it.

Gotta repeat what Steely_Gunz said Cold Steel Bushman tough to beat for the money.
Carry mine in a Spec-0ps survival sheath. Also never been disappointed by a SAK

I got a little Chinese-made Buck mini trapper for free at this years SHOT show, and it's mysteriously followed me around ever since I got it. I just love the blade profiles, honestly. The overall form of the knife is superb. I just wish it was in a higher-grade steel and the fit/finish were a little better. The spey blade's tip poked up a bit, but I file down the kick a tad and it seats perfectly now. Great little knife, and it really surprised me!

I formerly carried two Gerber LSTs and an EZ-Out (not at the same time!), and they were both pretty good inexpensive knives. I gather Gerber has since cheaped out on the steel on the EZ-Out though, I have the older style with the non-skeletonized blade. The LST was my first pocket clip knife and my first EDC.

I am hesitant to recommend them anymore, though. They are not heavy duty knives. The lock is strong, but there is no liner in the scales, just solid plastic. I can't see them failing in normal day-to-day use, but I'd feel like a total heel if I recommended one to someone and it failed on them.

CS canadian belt knife sees alot of kitchen use, chinese schrade smokey lockback-a little blade reprofilin and she can stand up with anything, and just starting to carry a Camco texas jack. All under $15

Depending on application, a Swiss Army Knife Classic (every-day-carry where it is advisable to carry a 'cute' sized knife), an old Buck 110 (when no need to worry about drawing raised eyebrows.) I actually carry the SAK Classic everywhere I go (except the airport) with my Delica.

I don’t carry a knife, gets in my way. But I do use my $4.95 “Old Hickory” 8” kitchen butcher knife almost every day. Sharpened it once, about 5 years ago, until it shaved me. Carbon blade sharpens easily and holds up well. No problem with rust or discoloration, I always wash and towel dry immediately after use. I bring out my expensive knives only, when I feel a need to push out my chest, boast, and brag a little. Which, I do when someone comes around. LOL.

I agree on the caracara and the opinel:

Byrd Cara cara:
-I bought it and thought it was ugly, and gave it to my brother. He used the hell out of it. My brother's now an trader, but one time he worked a short stint in construction to make some quick cash, and he had to clear some vegetation so he attached the Byrd to a 2x4 piece of wood with screws (the byrd has some holes in the handles to accomadate this). He used it like a scythe and it did the job perfectly.

-Opinel 12:
Good thin blade for picnics

-Dozier spear point zytel:
Again I bought this and it wasn't my style but again my brother used the hell out of this knife too.

-Cold steel Gunsite I 5":
I use the hell out of this knife...everything from cutting pizza and opening boxes to prying crates and throwing (for fun when I'm bored)

-Leatherman wave:
such a useful multitool

My Kabar Short Heavy Bowie makes one heck of a chopper. There's nothing really "short" about it.
$36 from Knifecenter.
