Your choice for a daily carry-Gentlemen's knife

Seems like when one mentions "Gentlemen's knife", the connotation becomes specific in the minds eye. In my job, I can't carry a fixed in a sheath, nor a large folder, nor a neck knife. BUT, I can carry what we used to call a "pocket knife". The size is usually 3" closed and tucks nicely in the front pocket. Usually clips aren't used.

I had been carrying an old Schrade for years and would trade off every once and again for a SAK (small compact). I started to buy an Umfaan, but bought a small sebenza first. Sebenza is okay and I can carry on the belt in a sheath or use the clip, but it is really too big to call a Gentlemen's knife.

Just this week I bought a Spyderco Mini Dyad and this seems to really fit the needs of a small pocket knife. Small, (removable clip), sharp as blazes, drop it in front pocket, not affected by small change and pocket lint, and doesn't seem to scare the coworkers when you pull it out to slice an enevelope, box, tape, fruit, etc.

What's your favorite Gentlemen's knife that you carry daily?

My Spyderco C25 small Centofante is always in my front right pocket. I think it's blade shape and pointy profile make it the perfect letter and box opener. I really like the back-up secure-lock. I left the clip on, but rarely use it. I also always carry a BM Pardue designed 850. I don't as much (I don't want to mess up the rainbow anodization on the bolsters), but it is an even better 'gentleman's' knife. Very solid lock-up. Nice weight and feel in the hand.

Sheeple are sometimes alarmed by the Spyderco (oh, that's pointy!, etc), but the usual reaction to seeing the BM850 is ooh, that's pretty!.

I also frequently carry a Boker carbon steel whittler. Pocket friendly, good blades, no adverse reactions, ever.

WH Amber Jigged Bone Spearpoint in a well done G2 HZ sheath. Never fails to get compliments and doesn't freak the sheep nearly as much as the SOCOM D/A. I can throw it in my pocket if I don't want to put on a belt. Classy little knife all the way around. They are starting to get a small cult following (not in any way competitive with the sebenzanistas)even though they are way better looking.

This is an easy question to answer.

The finest gentleman's folder that is currently being produced is any of the William Henry line of knives.

For me it happens to be a #12W Spearpoint(fileworked by Frank Recupero), others may prefer different models, but you can't go wrong with any of them. (although I don't care for the Carbon Fiber ones).

Senior Hack,

Do you have a Pic of the recupero work on yours? That and some engraving on the bolsters has been popping up for some time now as a possibility. I wold love to see what he did on yours though...

While I wouldn't classify it as a "gent's" knife, my SAK Mini-ChampII is always with me. I've carried a varient of this knife yor years now, and wouldn't want to live without it. It's the same size as the smallest SAK - 2.25" IIRC - but has many more tools. It's got two blades, scissors (for cutting fingernails), flathead screwdriver (which I've found works great as an emergency torx bit to tightent up pivot screws), a little guthook kinda thingy that I use to peel oranges (works perfectly), a nail file w/ fingernail cleaner, tweezers, and - new this year - a phillips head screwdriver w/ bottle opener, and an ink pen. The ink pen replaces the toothpick and uses a slider bar to pop out ot the end of the knife. Works suprisingly well. The ink cartridges can be replaced. Only $18.95 at Briley Cutlery. There's not a better knife value around.

More than any other knife or tool I may have, this little thing gets by far the most use.

Fo a real gent's folder, I carry my John Etzler pearl and damascus folder. Of course, I should have a new Michael J. Smith gent's folder with AT-34, mammoth ivory scales with satin steel bolsters, and jeweled and anodized liners waiting for me when I get home this afternoon!

Had one, before I knew better. Can't remember the brand. Stainless handles, two blades, under 1.5 inches, kept a perfect edge, scared not a soul... Then it ran away from home... never found it or one like it. That was the perfect, people friendly 'gent's blade'.

Walter--I've been looking at the AlMar model you carry. I can't seem to find what type of steel the blade is? Does it have a clip or not?

While I don't own one, William Henry knives is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking gents folder. Classy and lightweight, but sharp and durable.

My 0.02,
Mitch

The William Henry line fits well in this category and lately they seem hard to find!

But I recently had the opportunity to handle two of W.C. Davis folders, both with 440V blades, handles scales were Sheephorn on one and Impala on the other, each resting on integral aluminum sides, bolsters are dovetailed nicely. Traditional rear lockback type folder, very nicely done and would fit in this category as well!

The other, as Kelly mentioned, the SAK's are in more peoples pocket than about anyother, I always carry the Executive model in my left front pocket, very handy, wouldn't be without it!

Looks like the new Beretta Electra could qualify in this category

Tangus,
The blade steel is AUS-8, It is almost identical in construction to the Spyderco Calypso Jr. (Micarta) except it is thinner and the blade stock is thinner as well.
It does have a clip that is left/right reversible or removable. It uses the lanyard hole, so if you take out the clip you have the lanyard hole but with the clip installed no lanyard.
The Hawk model is smaller and had no clip at all, and the Eagle is largest and also has a clip.
IMHO a great line of knives that seem to be overlooked.

Walter

Oops, forgot the A after AUS-8A. And I forgot that you can get them satin or mirror finish, I have the mirror finish and it is very nicely done.

While I don' t suit up often, I consider my Jess Horn LW to be a gents folder. Light, functional, "non- threatening", and relatively inexpensive.

The CRK Umfaan or William Henry Lancet is almost always with me.

Spyderco Calypso jr (Plain edge, Micarta handle)

Not only beautiful but THE sharpest slicer you will ever use.

Case Peanut! Nice, small & you can actually use it!

Or a M-UDT w/the pocket clip removed (if you want).
