Your choice for a daily carry-Gentlemen's knife

Hello,

I carry a Spyderco Jess Horm lightweight every day as a gentleman's knife. Slim profile, light, and good blade geometry to open packages and the like.

BigRott, you mentioned a Spyderco Jess Horn lightweight. I'm wondering this is the same one mentioned in the A.G.Russell catalogue. I was thinking of one of those as the next acquisition.

When dressed up(which only happens for church) I carry a Boker Gamma. This is a small ceramic and it is usually more of a conversation piece than a good cutting knife.

Outside of a dog, a Knife is man's best friend. Inside a dog it is very, very Dark.

I'd like to second (or third) the suggestions of William Henry,(particularly the smaller models), and the Al Mar, a very "dressy" model. Both are very sharp and a little different after all the Zytel and G10 black/tactical numbers.

Case mother of pearl handled Whittler is very classy.

I like the Buck 532 series. I think this is a perfect gents knife. Small enough for pocket carry and big enough for daily chores. I have several but I find myself carrying the jig bone model the most.

Buck is going to have a special 2000 model this year in BG42.

To me, this should be the BFC knife this year.

I always carry more than one knife on me, but what I consider gentleman's knives are:
SAK Classic, Minichamp, or Executive.

Spyderco Ladybug or Ladybug II (the latter is on my keyring).

Cold Steel Tuff-Lite (flat-ground clip point, one and 7/8-inch long blade). I got this to replace the LadybugII on keys when air traveling.

Spyderco Calypso Jr. Micarta.

CRKT Classic Kiss. This one is shiny finished, made in Japan, chisel-hollow-ground clip point blade. Locks up tightly, thinner edge.

I was pushing it with the Calypso Jr. At Christmas, a comparable-sized knife, the SS-handled Rookie, was used to open packages. Some family members were nervous and referred to my "huge" knife!!

(it's actually smaller than a Delica).

One more good gentleman's knife may be the Spydie Dragonfly.

Well I have been on a search for a gents folder for the longest. I have posted here a few times for sugestions. Today my girl ordered for me a center cross folder with rosewood scales, stainless bolsters and three inch blade. large enough to really do work and small enough to not be to intimidating. Natural handle material is mandatory in a gents knife for me.

The Al Mar lightweights are, I also believe, overlooked and the smaller ones would make nice "Gent's" knives.

A.G. Russell has quite a few knives of a size and quality to be a gentleman's knife. Traditional, lockback, linerlock, from ivory to carbon fiber, they've got most of the bases covered.

A friend just today gave me a well-used knife that instantly became my "Gent's knife": a Gerber Silver Knight. It's about 3" closed, has wood scales, shows pride in workmanship, and has that "snick" when it locks that says quality.

Hi y'all,

I am also a fan of the William Henry knives.

I carry a Pearl handled Lancet frequently.

GREAT quality and workmanship.

When I am limited to carry just one folder (which is rare), I carry my Chris Reeve Umfaan. It is small, and light enough for the pocket in its slip-sheath, but the BG-42 blade will get the job done with no effort.

My thought is this that a "gent" knife should be small enough to be carried in the pocket. The trouble with Umfaan and WH knives is that they don't have full spacers so if you don't keep them in their pouch, loose change can dull your blade and I don't want to have to carry them in a pouch.

I don't think 3" knives qualify as Gents but if they did my first choice is the Calypso Jr.

Going to the smaller sub 2 1/2" (federal facility length limit) BM330, CF Dragonfly and Navigator in no particular order.

I've also been hunting for realistic gent's folders that won't require a second mortgage on the house. I usually use a BM Pardue in ivory micarta but I prefer natural scales and with small knives also prefer a clip. I'm eagerly awaiting a custom Tighe which will be my daily. Meanwhile, the small Sebenza with decoration or wood inlay or custom engraving is calling my name, but so is the mortgage company...

Tangus,
You almost bought the perfect gentleman's knife, the Umfaan.
Even though I've got a handy sheath for my small Sebenza (thanks to you), I always carry my Umfaan. It's a beaut!

I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but my choice for a gentleman's folder would be the Cenofante or Centofante Jr. Or if you have the $, a Chris Reeve Umfaan would be nice too.

I like a Micarta Jess Horn that I have and sometimes a small Sebenza! they are both simple, yet elegant.

I recommend the Benchmade Pardue 330. It is only 1.3oz. and it has good 2.3" ATS-34 blade. The blade is plenty big enough for real work but the knife fits without a trace when put into the pocket. It is also a very airport friendly knife. Those who want something fancier can get it in pearl.

SammyB,

Check your e-mail for filework pics.

Beam,

I understand your thoughts about the WH line having no spacers, but I believe that the ONLY thing that is carried in whichever pocket you carry your knife in should be just that, a knife. No change, no keys, etc., nothing to get in the way of the knife, because "You never know".

Yikes, I carry all kinds of knives and change almost daily. But my favorite is custom collaboration but I don't carry it daily. Daily, I usually switch between a Boye BDS-15, a Benchmade 820 and a Spyderco C5 that's been customized by Frank Recupero. They are all 3 inchers and I never use the pocket clips except as a money clip. I have another 50 or 60 that I carry from time to time but these three get the most use as daily carry "gentlemen" knives. Take care.

Tangus,

AG has a few variations of the Spyderco Jess Horn lightweight as exclusives. The base Spyderco model has Zytel handles, and a 3 1/8" blade. Some of AG's have a slightly shorter blade length and others have different handle materials. Check the specs to make sure you get the one that will suit you best.
