Your choice for a daily carry-Gentlemen's knife

You might also look at the Moki Blossom and Moki Amaranth. These are highly polished stainless steel throughout with beautiful mother-of-pearl inlays, handmades from one of the world's best knife makers.

There is a thread on the Blossom, with pictures, in the Knife Reviews group and James Mattis has them for on his web site. Check it out at www.chaicutlery.com and stop by my site for more info.

I carry a SS Dragonfly daily at school. It's also the knife I carry when I "suit up" for more formal occassions. While it doesn't have the elegance of a William Henry I still think it is a nice looking knife.

Seems like when one mentions "Gentlemen's knife", the connotation becomes specific in the minds eye. In my job, I can't carry a fixed in a sheath, nor a large folder, nor a neck knife. BUT, I can carry what we used to call a "pocket knife". The size is usually 3" closed and tucks nicely in the front pocket. Usually clips aren't used.

I had been carrying an old Schrade for years and would trade off every once and again for a SAK (small compact). I started to buy an Umfaan, but bought a small sebenza first. Sebenza is okay and I can carry on the belt in a sheath or use the clip, but it is really too big to call a Gentlemen's knife.

Just this week I bought a Spyderco Mini Dyad and this seems to really fit the needs of a small pocket knife. Small, (removable clip), sharp as blazes, drop it in front pocket, not affected by small change and pocket lint, and doesn't seem to scare the coworkers when you pull it out to slice an enevelope, box, tape, fruit, etc.

What's your favorite Gentlemen's knife that you carry daily?

My daily carry is a Swiss Army executive. As opposed to other small knives, this one has a decent large blade; scissors which are probably used more often than the blade; a fingernail cleaner which is the perfect size to fit small phillips head screws on computers, vcr tapes, and electrical equipment. Only drawback, knife needs sharpening often. Edge holding not the best.

I too have a beautiful custom tradtional lockback made by W.C. Davis w/ presentation grade cocobolo. It has a boot blade style similiar to Jess Horn's boot knife and has AL- bolster/frame.

Moki: stag handled custom/production, ATS-34
w/ SS bolsters. Fantastic fit and finish.

Al Mar limited production ivory micarta(no liners), satin ATS-34 , I believe Eagle?

My favorite is also a SAK Executive. I've got 3 of them. I carried a black one from 92-99 and retired it due to blade wear on the main blade. Now I'm using a blue one that a friend gave me a couple of years ago. I also bought a 96 Olympic one on ebay last month.

Beam,

I understand your thoughts about the WH line having no spacers, but I believe that the ONLY thing that is carried in whichever pocket you carry your knife in should be just that, a knife. No change, no keys, etc., nothing to get in the way of the knife, because "You never know".

Thing about that is everything seems to be in my right pocket. Getting things out of the left is inconventient and slow so if "You never know" then I just prefer it in my right pocket with the keys and the change. If I think I will be in a situation where I may be in danger then a 4" clip knife is the daily carry (BM710) but thats outside the scope of a gent knife.

Aside from lack of spacers, too,its hard for me to make a case for the Umfaan over either BM330 or Spyderco Navigator. I think in both cases the latter are more useful. And yes I have owned an Umfaan.

My BM330 gets used when I'm out on the town, but for everday carry, my BM705BT calls my left front pocket home!

Ditto for me and the BM330. I have both the G-10 and mother of pearl models, the latter of which is from my spouse and hence a mandatory daily carry

I also carry a Buck 501MS, with a 2.75" BG-42 blade ... a nice substitute for a small Sebenza.

I agree with Roger (Beam) on the spacer issue (both aforementioned BM and Buck have spacers)... one that I've posted about before. The idea that the pocket is "owned" by a knife makes it too precious to be useful for me.

Like the TSR wars of the early PC days when every utility you bought insisted that it had to be the last one loaded (and hence have control).

Like... the knives already own my bank account, I don't need them to dictate my wardrobe too!

Gotta say that my favorite, non-people scaring folder (for when I really get all dressed up)is an old 2 bladed Barlow that my Grandfather carried for years, it has been sharpened so much that the blade is really starting to look like a "civilian"...lots of sentimental value, for those special occasions like weddings and funerals.....

Of course, I Always have a larger folder clipped into my waistband, either a Crawford custom or a Benchmade.

If no one has noticed, that over 50 posts, it definitely shows that the forumites pay as much detail to their "gentlemen's knives" as they do to their larger carries. Notice the wide selection of price ranges, blade steels, production vs. customs, AND the wide variety of scales used. Goes to show that with the variety we have seen in one simple question, there is more than enough room for any new innovations from existing and new makers. Thanks, one and all.

And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold the great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads...And His tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth; and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

Not really a gents knife, but a great pocket knife is the Opinel #6. It is one knife I have carried every day, and works well riding in the front pocket.
