What is on your custom wish list for 2009? I am very excited about two Gossman Kepharts, one with a 5" A2 blade, the other with a 4" A2 blade. Coming up in January! Really nice cocobolo I picked out (almost all of my customs have cocobolo, I was looking for desert ironwood for these, but the coco just looked great).
I have a few productions I would like to trade for, but I am interested in getting some customs. Most are bushcrafty :foot:. Except for one, I've owned or still own models from all of these makers.
Off the top of my head, I'd like to get some newbies from Stomper (Hiker, Bushcrafter), Scott Gossman (I need a big camp blade again, simple as that
), J Neilson (one of his bushcrafter scandis), David Farmer (a camp knife), Butch Harner (another big camp knife), Larry Nowicki (a bushcrafty knife), Koyote (a design I am working on), Blind Horse Knives (their Bushcrafter) and ML Knives (another Kephart). I've never had a Fiddleback, but I'd like to get one of his models. Well, maybe not all in 2009
.
I don't know why, but I prefer tactical looking folders, like my Ritters, Striders and Sebenzas. I just don't have a care for tactical fixed blades anymore. I have no reason to own one.
Something else that I really like is that I have met most of these gentleman, or at least talked on the phone or through email. I've been to Scott and Larrys shops, met Butch a couple of times, talked with J at shows in the past, talked with LT Wright at shows in the past. I've talked with David Farmer on the phone. Emailed Koyote, ML and Stomper. Talked through messages with Fiddleback on Jerzeedevil, if I remember correctly.
One of the reasons I prefer customs over production is that I know most of these gentlemen, and appreciate the heart and skill that goes into these knives. Not to discount production knives. I know a few people at CRK, and have talked through PM's with Mike Stewart and others at BRKT, and Sal Glesser has to be one of the most helpful company owners I've ever talked to.
Many makers have wanted a review of the knives I've gotten from them. I owe Scott one, as his Buffalo knife was the first custom I ever bought. They haven't requested one posted on line, they want to know how their knife holds up. What I did with it. How can they improve? Hell, these guys are at the top of their game.
