Your "Failure is not an option" knife.

I have several knives I trust to that extent, but the one I carry ever day is my Camillus Aftermath. There isn't much that can go wrong wtih a big, well-built framelock. The Aftermath combines bomb-proof design and materials with what I consider the most versatile blade shape (clip-point recurve), an outstanding grip, dual guards, and a huge 5-1/2" D2 blade. All in a knife that disappears into my pocket until I need it.

If I know I'm going to be fighting mutants and zombies hand-to-hand I'll bring my Camillus Southwest Bowie and ATC Brend Hatchet. But if the apocalypse fails to call ahead for an appointment, I'll still have my Aftermath and I know it won't let me down.

I am going to join the crowd and say that, for a folder, I trust my Greco Falcon the most. However, I pried a sprinkler up with the tip a few months back and the tip bent :( But, the lock-up is awesome and the knife is very solid.

FOr a fixed blade, I trust my Cold Steel SRK, simply because I know it and have used it hard, without any failure. Hypothetically, I would trust a Fehrman or a Busse knife, too, but I don't own either brand (yet :D )

Very interesting. I am surprised by some of the responses. Benchmades seem to rule the roost, but although they are among my favorites, in my opinion the blades are on the thin side when it comes to a stout knife; but it makes them a much better slicer than most, if only they would grind their secondary bevels thinner. I am also surprised that so far only one person has mentioned Buck/Striders and I haven’t seen anyone preferring the SOG Tomcat or the Megaladon (used to be available and seemed to have a good reputation here on the Forums).

Questions like this get a lot of people telling you what their favorite knives are, regardless of how well they answer the question itself.

The Tomcat is a great, classic knife. Time to upgrade from AUS 6? I remember the Megaladon from KFC but don't recall anything here on it. Expensive, never saw one or spoke to anyone who did, and the website's been down a long time. I was interested in the design and strength of it myself, but not sight unseen at that price.

Esav, you are right, something better than AUS6 would be nice. My mistake, I knew I saw Megaladon somewhere, sounded very interesting, but sight unseen, I didn't buy it either.

Hey Richard,

From my half-year or so around here, I haven't seen too many fanciers of SOG knives. I personally have one that is an ok knife, but it doesn't have the same quality that my Benchmade or others do.
It would be interesting to see what people's favorite off-beat brands are (basically, anything other than Benchmade, Spyderco, et al.) :)

Folder: Buck/Strider Lg. Spear point
Benchmade 806D2
Multi: Leatherman Wave
Fixed: Becker BK7; has felt good so far.

My G*d yes, the SOG Tomcat is built like a tank. Huge bolsters and pivot pin. Locks like a bank vault. I just don't think of it because mine is a "Safe Queen." Steel is like AUS 6A, right? But it would be hard to break. And what about the WW II U.S. Navy Survival Kit aviators knives? If you could't cut with them, you could use them as clubs. Massive 4 5/8" locking clip blade with a pretty fair 5" saw blade.

Richard, you get my vote on that Greco Falcon. Yes, it is a rough-looking knife with formidable qualities!

for folders---Spyderco Mouse, small sure, but it's a tank!
fixed...hmmmm I dont own very good fixed blades. I guess id trust my cheapy sharpfinger as much or more as anything I have in a pinch.

I don't have a "failure is not an option" knife. All of my knives cut well.

I actually have several knives that I would depend on if "failure were not an option" and they all handle their intended tasks well, including cutting

Folder- Swamp Rat Prototype Folder
Fixed- Busse Battle Mistress Variant or Swamp Rat Satin Finished Battle Rat(zero edge)

:D:D

Eric,

What does the Swamp Rat Prototype look like? Any idea when they will go into regular production? Sounds interesting.
