Your favorite beater knife?

Right now it's my Byrd Cara Cara 2. It's so cheap I feel no guilt abusing it. Before that it was an Endura.

The one knife I use practically everyday and don't mind using it roughly is my large classic CR Sebenza. The other day I used the handle to pound a large steel pin back in place. I will cut practically anything I need to around the house or office. I just took it apart to clean and lube for the very first time the other week since purchasing out about four years ago. It still looks good for what it has gone through over the years. I know I could send it back to the factory for a spa treatment but then it would lose it's "character" <grin>.

Here's another shout out for the Ontario Rat 1. I paid around $30 for mine a couple years ago and its liner lock is as strong as the day I bought it. The steel sharpens well and holds an edge surprisingly well. I've used that bad boy for everything from slicing oranges to busting open bags of concrete. I've not pryed with it, but it IS a folding knife after all :-P For the money, it can't be beat.

I don't believe I abuse my BK2 (or BK9) but my Beckers get used hard and I expect them to perform. They continuously exceed my expectations. Disassembled a decent sized storm killed maple this weekend with my BK2 in order to clear a trail. Worked perfectly...

Beckerhead #42

Buck Special. I was carrying once on a day hike. I got bored when I stopped to rest and decided I would try and throw into a tree. It didn't really throw to well. But it was fun. It bounced off several times and landed on nearby rocks and chipped everywhere on the handle, spine, and blade. No big deal as it was now partly serrated. I grindded out the blade, sharpened it up and it's been my beater knife. I really don't care for it as I have other knives I would prefer for serious use. So I beat the crap out of it whenever I can. Still going strong. :D

Bucklite lockback with about a 3" blade that I got when I was 6 years old (I'm now 32). It was my 2nd knife. The blade finish is scratched to hell, the tip had to be sharpened, and the blade has lost some length and thickness due to extensive use. It's a good knife. I don't carry it around anymore due to size, but it's still my favorite beater knife.

Why you hate it? To me it's a pretty good little knife :), I've been using it more and more.

For me, things started off horrible with the Persistence. It came dull, extremely inconsistent in speed of deployment, and took weeks of working in (including taking apart, cleaning and lightly polishing the "bushings," bending out the super tight pocket clip, deciding on an edge angle that wouldn't go dull quickly, etc). It was my first and almost last Spyderco. If it is indicative of all knives using this steel, then I'm not a fan of 8Cr13MoV. At some point, I cut my finger slightly with it which made me like the knife a little since it proved it was sharp. The handle is not comfortable to me when used for an extended period of time. I have more, but I hope that gives you some idea of why. Since then, I don't buy "value" knives. I've come to appreciate the benefits that come with saving for a better blade.

Actually my Bear Grylls survival knife. I bought it on a whim, but its actually been holding up against all the stuff I throw at it... including the times ive thrown it at stuff. It gets used a good deal on wood and for prying and hammering. just today I decided I needed one stick to be two sticks and since I lacked a good baton stick a rock filled in nicely.
