Thanks guys for all of your input. I have a lot of knives to look at before I make the wood mock-up! For those of you who were wondering, I am looking at 5160 steel, 1/4" thick. I am going to have the the blanks cut out using water jet at a local machine shop.

I will post pictures of the wood mock up when I get it done.

When I hear chopper I'm excluding hatchets so here goes:

My all time favorite for portability and chopability is my 16" GK bonecutter

My HI Foxy's Folly would be up there too 17" 23oz

Another fave would be the 17" Ganga Ram Villager by HI

I like the FFBM, CGFBM, Dog Father LE, AK, 22" Dui Chuirra and alot of others. There are a bunch of great choppers out there.

Hi chewbacca
I might want one of your blanks if I like the design.... I could do the HT and handle myself...
If you are the same chewbacca as the one on Messerforum.de you're not that far from me. I could possibly pick it up on a weekend....
Looking forward to your results!

Different chewbacca...I am not sure I am going to make any to sell, but it is an interesting proposition. I will definitely post pictures of the wood mock-up, and maybe see if there is any additional interest. That way I could have extras planned before they ever put water to the steel.

UDT the axe pictured is a sportsmans axe.
which can be easily outchopped by many knives actually.

my tow favorites are the DFLE and my Ranger rd9 ... of course they are also my only two.
:D

Never happen. I cut and split about thirty pickup loads of ash every fall. I know choppers and splitters. I heat with nothing but wood.

The HUGE chopper that Jason Knight had at Blade:thumbup: I'm working on a couple myself in the 10 inch range. The first one is a hidden tang with an African blackwood handle and and a forward lanyard hole drilled into the top ear of the guard like John Fitch did on one of his cutting comp knives.
