Your favorite cover (handle) for your EDC

Thought I might as well put a pic up of one of my favorite barlows and show it's wood, even though I didn't take it. If the sun would come out, I'd put up a pic of the very nice Blue Camel Bone 78 that I was lucky enough to just score. Maybe later.

This Cell Bulldog leads a solitary life, but Cell and certain Acrylics do find favour with me. Many disdain synths but that's good for if we all liked the same thing....recipe for permanent frustration;):D

That's a beauty, Will, one of the best. If celluloid did NOT outgas, it would be right up there for me with ram's horn. As it is, I still have a small collection of butter & molasses, I just can't resist!

My favorite knives are scout patterns, so cover choices are rather limited. For the most part, I have the option of Delrin or jigged bone. Delrin makes a lot of sense, since it’s so impact resistant. Boy Scouts would traditionally suspend their scout knife from their belt, allowing it to bang into everything that came near to them. Early models had bone covers, but they didn’t stay crack free for very long. I tether my Delrin Scouts via a lanyard, and dangle them into my back pocket. Delrin works great for this, since sitting on the knife won’t crack the covers.

But Delrin looks only so good, and unless it’s the classic yellow, you always know that it’s faux something, whether it be faux stag or faux bone or whatever. So sooner or later, you’re craving the real deal, and finding a way to carry something in jigged bone. I really like old dark brown jigged bone. It has a wonderful depth to it when suitably polished.

For non-scouts, I’m all over the board. I love the look and utility value of natural canvas micarta, but also treasure Sambar stag and some woods. I spent half of this last year carrying an ironwood covered Barlow, and had no complaints. I don’t have much stag, just because good stag is very expensive, and really have to be in the right place at the right time to get it.

Fossilized materials Mammoth tooth and ivory. Loved em, but am now forbidden by the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia to use such, we might endanger an extinct species:

Natural handle material guy hands down. Don't make me choose.

Gorgeous post, gorgeous knives, gorgeous steel! Wow!

The OP asked for a favorite handle material on an EDC... Not sure if that's different than a favorite material period, but for me, it's natural materials with rams horn, stag, and bone in that order of preference. That's my choice -- even on EDC.

On an EDC I like jigged bone or smooth Delrin. On collecting knives I love textured stag, ebony, and bone. OH

Great post, really got me thinking. At first I thought that replying would be easy, but then as I write I come to realize that I really like a wide variety of cover materials and cannot easily pick a favorite as that changes almost every day. Gun to my head I would have to say Micarta, but Jigged Bone, Buffalo horn, Ebony wood, Dessert Iron Wood ( in no particular order ) would come a close second. Sorry for not giving any real answer, but again great post.

Canvas or linen micarta for my customs. I love the elegance of ivory, but I can't afford a knife I won't carry and use.

I like a variety but I'm partial to good stag or nice bone, jigged or smooth. My current rotations have Jigged Bone, Stag, Ironwood, and Muslin Micarta

I love the looking glass abalone (clear acrylic overlay). 2nd fave are the other acrylic's GEC offers - GEC's acrylics are much more interesting than Case's Corelon or kirinite ... JUST WISH GEC WOULD OFFER MORE ACRYLICS

Great question! I like most handle materials save celluloid. My first thought was to say stag, but I have a hard time bringing myself to carry stag because of the beauty. For a EDC, I like the Buck saw-cut Delrin and the Case yellow smooth synthetic handles. However, my favorite EDC cover would be bone: smooth, jigged, clawed, etc.

For pocket knives, delrin by a long shot. Tough, stable, chemical resistent.

For sheath knives, stacked leather washers first. Then wood, particularly osage orange and ironwood.
