what's your favorite firesteel striker? for me, its either a nice sharp knife spine or a small power hacksaw blade with the teeth ground off (as seen in the top right of the photo below).

that one you sent me works great

other than that one, the spine of an opinel also works really well, even if the knife is folded shut.

My favorite is the spine on my Krein Bushcraft! I've got hacksaw blades with most of mine also, but nothing works as good as the tip of my Bushcraft! Having something non-flexible and that allows for good leverage has been what has really helped me through some good sparks.

I keep a short piece of hacksaw blade handy usually, and I keep a spot on the spines of my knives sharp enough for the task (for just in case I have to), but what I have found recently that works best is the spine of my Woodswalker. A light swipe with that gives me better sparks than anything I have tried.

B, i agree, the opinel does work well. the spine doesn't need any work, it comes nice and sharp. also nice for scraping piles of dry wood dust or fatwood curls for getting a fire going...

naked, i agree. hadn't really thought about it before, but a stiff striker works better, it lets you get alot of control and leverage in the strike.

Yup - Spine of my Koster's Bushcraft.

I purposely used my diamond hones to make the spine of my knife VERY square. It tosses SHOWERS of sparks.

The spine of my F1. It works the best although somehow I feel guilty about doing it as if it might damage the knife.

andrew, don't feel guilty. no damage to the knife. the heat is not sustained long enough to do any damage to the hardness, and since it isn't on the edge, you aren't damaging the cutting ability anyways.

I've made a couple strikers out of sawsall blades but my favorite has to be the spine of my Spyderco Centofante III. Either the flat spine or the notched thumb ramp.

The best striker I have is the back of a Spyderco Native blade - the thumb grooves make a fantastic striker. I also use the edge of the file on my Leatherman Squirt a lot.

I have to say that the light my fire striker that came with the firesteel work best....when i use the part you hold on to it works well. I figure its because they are punched from a sheet and have a real sharp burr on them. Also the spine of the saw blade off a SAK or my leatherman work great as well.

The spine of a Fallkniven F1 ... has given me the best results all the time.

honestly, what ever I have with me, usually it was the saw on my rucksack sak, but that got stolen I beleive, or I just misplaced it nowhere:rolleyes:

But yeah, the saw on a sak, or my revolver H, spine of most any knife, never really used a hacksaw blade, have to try that on of these days.
