YOUR favorite folding knife company and why?

First place- Spyderco
They make good designs at reasonable prices.
Their knives are designed for function, not just to look at.
They listen to customers and bring out models/variants that people ask for.
They like to experiment with esoteric steels.

Second Place- Benchmade

I can't say I have an absolute favorite yet, I have recently set out on the journey that you're about to start, and I gotta say you're doing the right thing. There's a lot of great knives out there, and being open to other brands makes things even more enjoyable. I started out with the typical Kershaw and Gerber knives, and then I bought my first really good knife, a benchmade hk axis mini and fell in love with it. I'm kind of an obsessive person by nature so I locked into benchmade and kind of ignored the others. I recently picked up my first spyderco, a paramilitary 2, here on the exchange (great place to buy and experiment with other brands without paying new prices) and I definitely see why spyderco has their own following. So now I'm planning on buying my second spyderco this weekend, probably a Gayle Bradley 2. Then maybe on to a zero tolerance, and cold steel. Searching out something from different makers is a lot of fun and so much more enjoyable than only looking at your normal brand. You're gonna have a lot of fun, and a lot of nice knives!

My name is George, and I approve this message.

I don't have a single favorite company. I own and enjoy a number of knife brands from different companies.

Cold Steel. I really dig Demko's designs and they are affordable while still excellent in quality. I wish they were US made, but they do use American steel and G10.

I own more CRK's than any other brand. They work for me and that's what matters.
I have many other brands that appeal to my interests as well.
As far as learning about different steels, geometry, specific uses, there's a world of knowledge fight here to learn from. I've learned more about knives here than anywhere else.
Take the time to read through the daily posts on the various forums to understand how people feel about their favorite knife/maker. Ankerson has an excellent thread on the ranking of steels that has informational comments. The makers forum is always interesting to read. Trust me, if you're patient enough, it will take a while to get the info together.
The mods do a fantastic job and can help in directions.

Victorinox. Consistent quality, a variety of configurations to choose from, effective design, easy to maintain, readily available, almost universal social acceptability, and extremely affordable. What's not to like?

Easily Cold Steel. No other company has such a candy store of user quality knives, machetes, training tools, and numerous other types of weaponry. No other brand has the number/frequency of deep dealer discounts (Kershaw comes close at times). They also have the best catalogs in the industry. Spyderco/Benchmade would probably be my favorites if I had money to burn.

I am a fan of the Chinese knives, Kizer. The Kizer Kane Ki5467 a collaboration between Matt degnan and Kizer is a gem and is my favorite. Beautifully built using the best materials. The quality of these knives is as good and better than many of the well known US production companies and without over inflated pricing.

Demko, definitely Demko.
To Crazy- if you want knowledge- read- a lot. Knife review and testing is a great Sub-forum I have found to impart very practical knowledge.
