your favorite horror movies?

halloween (still scares me)
alien
scream
witchboard (scare the shit out of me when i first saw it as a teen)
jaws (not really a horror movie, but frightening in a fairly unique way)
the exorcist (best horror movie ever made)

a few that aren't really horror movies, but i still found them rather disturbing:

seven
the devil's rejects
aliens (disturbing, but in an exhilirating, exciting way)

jaws (not really a horror movie, but frightening in a fairly unique way)

JAWS was probably one of the 10 scariest movies of all time. I think I was 8 when I saw it in the theater, and I was pretty well traumatized by it. I was scairt to swim in a landlocked lake for awhile after that. :p

Lair of the White Worm

Jim

You like Lair of the White Worm? That is a strange film. But oddly compelling.

Some of my favorites:

The Haunting (the original from 1963)
Dawn of the Dead (the original from 1978)
Evil Dead
Tremors (not really a horror movie, but very funny)
Coraline (horror for children)
The Exorcist
The Birds
Planet Terror (more of a pastiche)
Alien (space horror)
Silence Of the Lambs (not a love story)

Some other good, but somewhat bizarre, Japanese horror movies are:

Marebito (2004). I found this one twisted but very interesting. Definitely worth checkout out if you're into unique horror films.

Somebody else mentioned Ju-On, which is a pretty spooky movie. Lower-budget, but creepier than the U.S. remake, even though I think the U.S. version was remade by the same Japanese director.

Pulse (a.k.a., Kairo. 200?). (NOT the American remake). IMO, the first 30 to 45 minutes are the best and creepiest parts.

Jim

Couldn't agree more. The American remakes are never as scary as the original movies. I like some of the lower budget flicks, cg is just not that scary (ruined "I am Legend" for me). When a studio doesn't have tons of cash they have to rely on things like good acting, plot development and atmosphere. More and more it seems like American horror follows these cookie cutter scripts- a group of teens/college students/friends go on a camping trip/boat ride/sleep over/exploring some building and then they get trapped, people die one by one until……blah, blah, blah the killer/monster isn’t really dead after all- the end.
If you are into horror movies “Behind the Mask” is a must watch. I die laughing every time I watch it.

I really liked The Descent. It got me to jump several times.Cool story line to. Humans get trapped in a cave thousands of years ago and have evolved into blind humanoids.

Videodrome
The Exorcist
Nightmare on Elm Street
Poltergeist (Jo Beth was hot)
The Shining
Rosemary's Baby

Creepshow the movie scared the hell out of me when I was a kid (the one where the lady runs over the hitchhiker and he keeps coming back:eek:).

Audition

Blair Witch Project (first viewing)

and the one where theres a Japanese Samaurai/serial killer and the whole film he is torturing a woman. A very weird & realistic movie. I cannot remember the title for the life of me. edit: Guinea Pig: Flower of Flesh and Blood

Cutting Moments (CREEPY!)

August Underground Mordem (its very, shall we say, sick) but the film in a whole sucked just some of the images kinda of lingers in your mind.

Irreversible (a good movie)

You are a sick man.... or maybe I am because I have seen all of those movies. You know it's illegal in Japan to use the name Guinea Pig in a movie title? That movie messed a lot of people up, I am pretty jaded but that flick was hard to watch.

I think I remember seeing some of those Guinea Pig movies on sale at Tower Records before they closed their stores. I could never bring myself to buy them, because although I like horror movies, I really dislike 'torture porn' or gross-out for gross-out's sake. I think one of them was called Mermaid in the Manhole(?) or something like that.

Another interesting Japanese film is Stacy. Basically, all girls around the age of 16 or so start turning into flesh-eating zombies, at which point they are simply called 'Stacies'. It's a spoof; it's funny, it's violent and twisted in parts, but weirdly enough, some parts are oddly sad and touching. I don't know if I've ever seen a combination like that in a movie before.

I am going to look for 'Stacy' now :D

Hour of the Wolf (1968)

(No connection with Babylon 5 season 4/episode 1 "The Hour of the Wolf," except that J. Michael Straczynsk is evidently a Bergman fan.)

Wolf Creek-aussie -the scary bit is that the main bad guy was the same character that he played in a soapie that my mrs watched called McLeods Daughters-the friendly goofy Aussie bushman bloke-but in Wolf Creek....he was a bit different.

Blair Witch -I really wanted her to pop up & cook those stupid *#ckheads in a cauldron.
Superstitions-dated but pretty scary

Horror movies are my absolute favorite movies. Real horror movies, not this CGI 3D in place of story b.s. we are made to sit through these days. When prostheses and honest to God artistry was involved.

The Howling (best werewolf movie evah)
Phantasm
Phantasm II
I Spit on Your Grave (the original)
An American Werewolf in London
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Day of the Dead
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre II
Silence of the Lambs
Hannibal
Red Dragon
Manhunter
The Exorcist
Halloween (original, but I really like Rob Zombie's versions, too.)
Halloween II (ditto)
My Bloody Valentine (original)
Friday the 13th (original, although I do dig the new one, too.)
Night of the Demons (original)
Demons (Dario Argento)
Demons II (Dario Argento)
The Fly (the Jeff Goldblum one, it still makes me a little queezy)
Last Man on Earth (Vincent Price!)
The Omen (the original)
The new TNT production of Salem's Lot
Psycho (the original)
Psycho II
Nightbreed (DECKER'S A KNIFE KNUT!)

I haven't really seen any newer movies that can compare to the old stand-by's. "Paranormal Activity" had a really neat concept, and I think the A & E series "The Walking Dead" that premiers this Halloween will be really exceptional.

But everything else just seems rehashed, done to death, so unbelievable that suspension of disbelief is impossible, or like Dawson's Creek meets Laurel and Hardy meets (insert monster here).

I want a movie that makes me as uncomfortable as the Exorcist can still make me. Or that makes me root for the protagonist the way "I Spit on Your Grave" did.

I hear gruesome things about "Salo or 120 Days of Sodom". But, there's a waiting list a mile long on Netflix.

I love horror movies! My favorites are:
28 Days Later
28 Weeks Later
The Blair Witch Project
Cannibal Holocaust
Event Horizon
The Exorcist
Hannibal
Hannibal Rising
The Hills Have Eyes
Hostel
Last House On The Left
Red Dragon
All the Saw movies but I like the earlier ones most
The Strangers
The Thing
Turistas
When A Stranger Calls

Personally, I read 120 days of sodom by the Marquis before watching- it didn't do anything for me. Cannibal holocaust, on the other hand...

Battle Royale (Japan, 2001).

This movie is hard to classify. Some list it as horror, but it also has an odd mix of adventure and fantasy. Kids are losing respect for adults and are out of control, so middle school classes are chosen randomly to engage in "Battle Royale." The class is kidnapped by military, placed on an island, given some supplies and a different weapon each, and must each kill or be killed, until there is only one survivor.

The NTSC version is hard to find, and I suspect it has to do with the fact it's a violent movie featuring "middle schoolers" (they actually look somewhere between 18 to 22). The idea sounds dumb, but it's actually handled pretty well, and is a kind of study on human loyalties.

The Happiness of the Katakuris (Japan, 200?).
Directed by Takashi Miike (Audition, Gozu, etc.). A strange family opens a country inn and guests just seem to die. It's a musical, a comedy, a "sitcom", some claymation, and a bit or bizarre horror. In fact, this is one of the funnier movies I've seen.

Gozu (Japan, 200?).
Directed by Takashi Miike. Considered a Yakuza/horror film, with some comedy as well. There are a couple of absolutely cringe-inducing scenes in this one. If you don't mind a weird but slower-paced movie, you might like it.

Tokyo Zombie (Japan, 200?).
Briefly, this is a slacker/zombie holocaust/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/comedy/horror movie. Only the Japanese could make something like this work. Unfortunately, the DVD cover refers to this as the Japanese Shaun of the Dead. It's not; it's a completely different movie from that. Approach it from that perspective, and you might like it.
