Is it just me or are there too many good options in knives these days. I'm looking for my next grail and having a hard time finding the one. Basically I just want to see what's out there, preferably stuff that is reasonably available and reasonably priced, sub 1k.

So what is your current favorite midtech and why?

I like the Ferrum forge and Les George midtechs. Seems really well made. $400- $500 range.

The problem with the current crop of midtechs is ... titanium frame locks. I mean, why buy one over the other?

Ferrum Forge is by far my favorite. They are extremely solid and great all around EDC knives! They always have great ergonomics, blade geometry, Heat treat, and great steel. Solid lock up, good action, durable, blade finger choil, Steel lock insert, HRD, etc. Plus they always have a new model every month or so.

I have a bunch of knives, all different makers, but FFKW gets my business the most out of all the makers I like. Plus they are good guys and are always willing to help you with any problem you might have. For instance, I bought a heavily used SM100 phototype of theirs from someone for very very cheap, sent it to them and they fixed it up like brand new for a great price, along with some extra parts for my other FFKW knives. Which I will probably never need, but nice to have them. They are built to last.
Others I have had/have which are worth considering.
Jake hoback makes great midtechs. Olamic midtechs are awesome too! Mac Wasil makes good customs under 1000. There are some production knives that are definitely equal to or above mid tech quality. I hear Reate knives are fantastic!
Got to add Jeremy Robertson. I bought some of his customs on the secondary market for a decent price and they have become my 2nd favorite for harder use EDC.

What mid tech knives have you had before? Which ones did you like, and which ones got sold off? And why?

Good starting point so guys and gals aren't recommending knives you already know aren't your thing.

I love framelocks. And I love my Shirogorov.

I have a brous strife, Greg lightfoot custom, and a Chaves redencion. Love them all.

I really like the large Curtis f3 and some of the ferrum forge stuff is my taste. The knives I really like are well thought out designs and knives that I'm not afraid to use.

I have a Dervish Knives NavEDC, that is just outstanding. It smooth & sharp. I love it also because it is ambidextrous. It just feels confy. in the hand.

Agreed. I just ordered one of the Hawk's MUDD midtechs. A little something different. Be a few months, but I love the whole anticipation thing.

I know what you mean. I just jumped on the books for Brian Nadeau's mini typhoon. Literally got on the books as he closed them. I am really really excited for this one. It's an incredible value at under $500 with custom options.

Brian Nadeau's knives are very well made! You will be getting a great knife! I regret selling mine!

My favorite midtech that I've owned...is Brad Southard's AVO. Wonderful folder.

I'm basically echoing what others have already said, but there must be a reason why several of us agree...

Ferrum Forge
Les George
Southard

Nice. I'm waiting on their/TAD Dauntless Hawk Locks to become available again, while hoping that one comes across the exchange in the mean time.

I think I'm deciding between a hoback kwaiback, les george rockeye or the ferrum forge switch xl

One I forgot to mention....Curtiss. Dave's knives are technically customs, I suppose, but they're offered at mid tech prices for the most part. Check out his F3 when you can. It comes in wharncliffe or compound grind variants.

I've had a couple of his over the last few years. Excellent flippers with excellent materials with top notch customer service! I believe he still occasionally does a "knife of the day" on his website, where you can purchase one directly from him at a nicely reduced price for that specific day only.

Good luck in your search!

Thank you klute!

I have owned a Les George VCEP, and his work is outstanding as well.
