For a long time now, my go to (non-SAK) folder has been an old Spyderco Military in CPM 440V. It's extremely lightweight, locks up strong, is easy to sharpen, has an open design to ease cleaning, has a pocket clip and a lanyard hole, and opens with ease even with gloves on. The only thing I haven't liked about it is that it's a tip-down carry, and my preference is for tip-up (I need to break down and have it sent off to STR here on BF and have him put a tip-up pocket clip on it).

Lately, my preference in blade size has been getting smaller and smaller. I really like the handiness of a short blade for fine work and I feel that the Military is large enough in both handle and blade to feel cumbersome.

What are your favorite (non-SAK) outdoor folders and why?

My tiny opinel. Casts a fine spark, easy to sharpen and I don't worry about getting dirt in the pivot.
I like that you had to specify non-SAK, as I'm sure you would have received Vic Farmer/ Rucksack ad finitum

If I'm out in the woods or on the trail and carrying a knife that's not a SAK or Leatherman, it'll be my Case cv yellow trapper. It's a time-tested knife, and those thin carbon steel blades take and hold a killer edge. Plus, come picnic time, the clip blade is super at cutting up bread, fruit (it will actually slice an apple, whereas my thick-bladed Spydercos would cleave and split them apart), cheese, etc., and the spay blade is great at spreading stuff on bread. With my trapper and a Screwpop to open beverages, I'm all set.

Last fall I did finally break down and buy an Opinel No. 8. As the weather warms up, it might see some pocket time in the woods this year as well.

Edited to add: If weight is an issue, I'll bring along my Gerber LST.

Me too!

I have been taking the Mili instead of my usual fixed blade on day hikes and over nighters lately. Combined with a SAK Trekker and a sharp Machete it makes a nice combo.

I like the Spyderco Pacific Salt in plain edge. Big blade (Well, by my standards), light, tough, rustproof, lovely steel. The SE Spyderhawk's nice too, but it's less of a geneal purpose knife.
