Your Favorite (non-SAK) Outdoor Folder

Spyderco Tenacious: handle non texture is comfy for carving. Blade with high grind slices wood well. Blade is good length, guts deer well.

i would have to say my case hunter trapper. i carry tons of pocket knives yet no matter what that always makes it in my pocket somewhere. the only real downside to it is the gut hook is pretty useless if your not dressing game and even then its only good for the initial cuts to open it up. but it does have a decent little saw, and the main blade is easy to sharpen and holds a great edge, i dressed 3 deer with it this past season and its still razor sharp.

i am interested to hold a bone collector large version. it looks nice

That would be one of my Buck Alpha Dorados,

followed closely by my Spyderco Manix.

The reason I specified a non-SAK is because in the wilds I always have a SAK with me (Farmer or OHT). As much as I like them (I will always have a SAK or Multi-tool in the wild because of their versatility) I still prefer a separate folder for small tasks because I don't find SAKs or multi-tools very comfortable and I prefer one hand opening blades (I know, my OHT and my LM Wave are one hand opening but the feel isn't the same, and it never hurts to have an extra knife).

I'm thinking of having my Military converted to tip up carry, and I might have it Waved too for even quicker opening, but it feels big to me now.

I thought about buying a Para-military, but I don't care for the difficulty of sharpening S30V, regardless of how wonderful a steel it is. Ease of sharpening to me is a high priority in a survival situation and I usually carry a ceramic rod in the field, which isn't ideal for S30V. I do wish they made the Para-military in 154CM or VG-10.

I'm also considering getting another Spyderco Endura (or maybe even a Delica, which I've never owned) and having it either flat ground or Scandi ground, but I don't like the handle shape as much as it's hard to choke up on the blade. I do wish the handle was more like the Spyderco Native, Caly3, or Sage, which all allow choking up on the blade for finer work (these knives only come in very high end and difficult to field sharpen steels like S30V and ZDP-189).

I don't have anything in ZDP yet, but s30V really isn't that bad. Buy a $12 extra fine pocket dmt and your set. As I've said I've been beating on my s30v Sage to the point that it wouldn't even cut paper when I tried earlier today, about 10 minutes with the little DMT and it's back to popping hairs off my arm with just the weight of the blade. I can tell I'm not sharpening AUS8 or something along this lines, but it's really not bad and should definitely not be a deal breaker for you on a blade. If anything, it should be a deal maker. Now my 3V Koster laughs at the DMT, so I'm not one of those people that things all steels are easy, but that little DMT eats s30v no problem.

a lg NICA Sebenza....or if I am going to something special my william henry oasis...but I most always stick with chris reeve for something in my pocket...

Probably one of the traditional folders in this photo, either the Vintage Knives Model 1902 Moose, or the 1988 Winchester Moose.

Hi Remmmm,

I do have the DMT xfine (still sitting in it's package) and I'll play with it and S30V some and see what I think. To tell the truth I'm not very good at sharpening and tend to use my Spyderco Sharpmaker for most of my sharpening (don't have the diamond rods yet) and in the field I usually use a 4" ceramic rod.

My favorite stainless steel right now is 154CM, as it holds an edge beautifully and is very easy to sharpen. I know this is sacriledge to some but I even like the old standby 440C (a lot of my old knives are in this steel) for it's ease of sharpening, although I do like a steel that holds an edge longer.

I really like S30V. It's an impressive steel and it takes forever to really get dull. The only S30V I own right now are 2 Spyderco Natives I got to check out the steel (love the handles as the choil allows a decent size knife in a very small package, but I hate the blade and wish it was shaped more like a Sage or Caly3 and also flat ground).

My worry for backcountry extended use is something like chipping, which will take a lot of work to get out and improvised sharpening methods aren't too useful for S30V. I know for me the key to S30V is to touch it up often and not to let it get dull so that it's easy to maintain. I need to buy a Fallkniven DC4, as I think it might be the best field sharpener for me with both a ceramic and diamond side.

I really like the looks of the Sage, espcially the titanium frame lock version, and it's on my list of Wants right now.

I'm also considering getting another Spyderco Endura (or maybe even a Delica, which I've never owned) and having it either flat ground or Scandi ground, but I don't like the handle shape as much as it's hard to choke up on the blade. The FRN Delica and Endura are now available with a full flat grind for less than $60.
You might put up a WTB or WTT for a plain edge Calypso Jr. ltwt. in VG-10.
That's one of my long-time favorites, and I regret selling my spares.
btw, I carry that, or a Delica 4, along with a Vnox Recruit or Hiker.

I've been using this one alot lately. Its a Kershaw OD-1. I know, its hollow ground and it has a thin tip, but damn can it cut!

I've used if for EDC since I got it, so its seen alot of lunch food work, packages, ect. But I've also made several feather sticks with it and carved a spoon out of poplar just the other day.

I REALLY like this blade.

The EKA Swede 88 and Opinel nr. 8 are my favourite non-SAK folders. I recently bought a CRKT Lake 111 and although I haven't used it yet in the woods, it looks and feels okay.

Hmmm my 8OT, Case 6392, Schrade 881, Jim Bowie Stockman, Case Trapper, Buck 110. Gee I like stockmans and older knives.
