Your favourite carbon steel?

Alloy non stainless is my preference and I carry stainless seldom now. I'll go with

W2
O1
52100
Super Blue
3V
Vascowear/Cruwear/PD#1/Z wear/Spectrumwear etc:
4V
M2
M4/HAP 40
10V
Maxamet

And some more. Sorry, I can't really pick one and I'm glad I don't have to even though some of these steels will do everything I could ever think of needing my knife to do in large or small, slicer or chopper.

Right now I have a 220 grit Arkansas price of junk... It does work just a bit soft. My other stone is a king 1000 6000 combo stone. I really need to get a 400 or 6 I would say.

Bro, you should just get a worksharp field sharpener, they're like 25 bucks and you get a 300/600 diamond. 1000 grit white ceramic and a leather strop,
everything you need to sharpen a polished toothy edge on any steel in a small package.

I like it very much , scary steel . This one was TiN coated , but I make some scratch and decide to remove TiN complete .

Here is another one from the same HSS circular saw .These days I'll get another one broken HSS-E circular saw in about 40cm. Dia .and 4mm thick . My friend is probably still crying .... cost over 1200 euro piece :grumpy:

This one is 2.5mm ...................cuts was done with one hand :)

Very nice. All mine are made from parting tools, including some m42 (8% Co) and what I think is T42 (10% Co), scary stuff indeed.
Probably not fair to include these steels here since the only ones I know of in existence are all home made.

Right now, m4 is at the top of my A list for commercially available blade steels.

It's the best compact kit on the market in my opinion, if you are just a casual sharpener guy.
And for blades I like 1095, 5160 and T10 for swords.

I took a look and it looks pretty good. I looked at the full size when I was shopping around but couldnt find it in my budget.

My vote goes to O-1, if for no other reason than it's the shade tree bladesmith's best friend; not only is it relatively simple to heat treat, but it also has a well deserved reputation for dimensional stability and an ease of machining approaching that of the simple 10xx straight carbon steels. A beginning knife maker could do far worse than selecting a forgiving steel like O-1 to hone his craft.

T42 ....................look like it is same with Bohler S700 ............... ? Quote was from bohler-edelstahl.com

This class comes very close to reaching the limits of the possible in the production of high-speed steels. Its extremely high alloy content sets this type apart with very good wear resistance.

No one likes aebl ? I have seen a few knives made with it and have to say I'm intrigued , any one have any ?
