I had a lot of knives as a kid, given to me by relatives or bought myself with money I saved from birthdays or earned delivering newspapers. My very first knife was a Richards (of Sheffield) 'Little Chief' slip-joint, given to me by my uncle when I was about 5. Richards knives were very common in England back then, but absolute junk. My 'Little Chief' had a small spear-point blade, and a screwdriver/bottle-opener. I had other pocket-knives, all slip-joints at that time, and a couple of WW2 'jack knives' my grandfather gave me. My first FB was an old paring knife my mother gave me out of the kitchen-drawer, my dad put a good sharp edge on it at work and my mum made me a leather sheath for it. I carried that on my belt from the age of around 7 and it was a very useful knife. Later I would buy sheath-knives and lock-knives, often like the other boys, on school field trips. We were even all given a knife each on a school trip to a local cutlers. How times have changed!
