Very cool Colonial, pistonsandgears! I've had many over my last 54 years myself.

Great thread!

I just happen to be at my boyhood home this week, and found my first pocket knife in the old nightstand:

Mine was a single blade, carbon steel jack knife my dad bought me from the corner store. The scales were white and had a pic of an RCMP officer riding a horse........wish I still had it, I cleaned a pile of brookies with that knife.....

Great thread Maple Tree:thumbup: and welcome to the traditional forum:D from another new member. Wish I had the prescience to do a time capsule, maybe I would still have my scout knife.

Thanks Dave, too bad about the scout, hopefully a few good memories were stirred. Great first knives keep comin'.

Here's my first folding knife with my first fixed blade and centerfire handgun. I broke the tip on the Stockman prying something. I had plans on regrinding it but just haven't got around to it. The Schrade stockman was a birthday gift from my sister over 20 years ago.

My very first pocket knife was an Imperial Barlow that I broke by throwing it at a Chestnut tree. It was a while before my dad bought another knife for me.

Here's my first knife. I remember feeling all grown up when my father gave it to me. It let me know he trusted me with what was to my young mind something very important and valuable. My father and both of my grandfathers carried pocket knives. It was kind of a rite of passage.

It's the main reason I now carry a Case Peanut every day. That old knife rattles and feels like it's about to fall apart. It stays in the night stand now. I'd misplaced it for about 20 years but found it a year or so ago in a box in my closet. I was really happy to have found it. When I showed it to my Dad he didn't even remember giving it to me.

Carrying the peanut now is kind of a nostalgic thing. But it gets carried every day.I think I've been carrying this particular peanut for about 4 years.

The first knife I purchased, which I got on sale because it was around Father's Day. I was 12 or 13. I called it Officer Suzy. Now it lives in the kitchen drawer and opens the jellies and other things we've canned.

I'm pretty sure my first knife was one of those tiny key chain things that came out of a gumball machine. But my first real knives were, I'm sorry to admit, I don't even know what they were. That's because they were very badly abused and tossed into a toolbox after scraping whatever grease or dirt was in my way when trying to keep my mini bike, dirt bike or bicycle going. And if I ever sharpened them, it was probably by using a brick or something. There, I said it and I promise to never treat a knife that way ever again! Because I wish I had some of those back now. Am I the only one here to do these terrible things?:o

Not at all, a knife is a tool. I never collected for beauty and honestly still dont. It is a rare knife in my extensive collection now that isnt used now.

Though, I did learn to sharpen properly and do it regularly and well.

This thread prompted me to empty a couple of drawers in search of my first knife. Here it is untouched....will have to find some time to give it a good reconditioning.

My first, a US made Boker that I received when I was 9 or 10. Needs a cleaning, but it's perfectly serviceable.

My first folder, that I can remember, was an old timer medium stockman. I don't remember exactly when I got it, but it was already my "old knife" when it was stolen out of my coat pocket at school in the 4th grade, when I hung my coat up.

I wish I still had that knife.

My first fixed blade was given to me by my dad. One of those hollow handled survival knives. The saw was worthless, the steel was pretty close to shiny aluminum in edge retention. I broke the blade at the handle misusing it.

The first fixed blade I purchased for my self was a WW1 bayonet. I still have it in my garage. I don't believe I have a photo of it. But I used it as a throwing knife for decades, and it is still in one piece!

I do have a picture of one of the earliest knifes I bought. I purchased it when I was 12 year sold (some 25 years ago). I had planned on using it for deer/elk hunting, but never have. My uncle made it. It is a custom stag handled hunter by Glen Hornby. He passed away when I was still in my teens, so I kept it new.

I have pics of that, but it is a fixed blade, not a pocket knife.

My first real knife was the blue Camillus Cub Scout knife that I got when I was 8.
Prior to that I had a little pearl handled sheath knife my grandfather gave me.
The blade was maybe an inch long but it was very sharp for being such a cheap knife.

Both are long gone but I will get another Cub Scout knife someday.
There were tons of them made and they come up for sale often.

Mine was a Barlow I bought at Kmart in 1977. I wish I could find it! It's most likely in a drawer in my Dad's basement. Second was a SAK. Third was a Buck 110. Can't find any of them but hope to one day.

I owned one as a kid and have since lost it. I've been trying to track one down for quite a while, even just pictures of one so that I can satisfy my memory. Its a slip joint with Mr. Peanut on it, from what I have found recently its supposedly from the 1960's. I don't know how I came to own one. Just the other day I finally found some pictures of one, and it's almost identical to how I remember it. I also found a seller online that only has one for sale, for about $20. Unfortunately for me I just bought two new knives within a few months of each other. So due to my circumstances and my fiance, I will have to let this one slip through my fingers.... for now.

These are the pics I found.

My first was a SAK of some kind, a Christmas gift from my folks probably 20-ish yrs ago....sadly I no longer have it. I remember still having it while at my current house, so it's been within the past 5 years that I parted ways with it (a garage sale, iirc). Not that it had seen much use in recent years, but I wish I still had it, if only for sentimental reasons.

Given to me by my Grandpa for my tackle box. Learned to fish from Grandpa Henry!
