Your First Spyderco

When I first started getting into knives I actually didn't really like Spydercos, they just didn't appeal to me. I think it was the wide shape and the hole. But I heard so many good things I had to try it out. I read a lot of good reviews about the Tenacious, I had to pull the trigger just to see what the hype was all about. I got an all black Tenacious an almost immediately ordered another Spyderco. It was super smooth and felt great, even for the value line, it got me hooked, I now own about 15 of them and they are some of my favorite knives. I still own that Tenacious and probably always will, it still makes it into the rotation often. What was your first Spyderco, do you still have and carry it?

My first was this Calypso Jr. I must have seen it online somewhere but I have no idea where. I wasn't really into knives at the time, but I thought it was neat looking as soon as I saw it. I still love the shape and the size and the gray fish scale scales.

My first was a Dragonfly followed by a Persistence shortly after. I still have the Dragonfly but gave the Persistence to my son (along with a Delica). That first DF arrived only 9 months ago and started the addiction that led to many more.

Relatively new to Spyderco myself. I never liked the "plastic" handles. But the Sage has really impressed me. And the carbon fiber looks great imo.

The Harpy was a gift from gonebad. I love the slim profile. Fits in the back pocket well.

I always liked spyderco's idea of removing from the blade to open it rather than adding. I was originally planning to get a PM2 in S110V but something about the Nirvana made that my first and as of today only spyderco.

My very first knife (other than a little SAK) was a fully serrated Lady Bug. My parents gave it to me as a gift before I left for summer camp. Sadly, my first Spyderco went MIA a long time ago. Years later, the knife that got me into serious knife collecting was a Manix 2 LW (thanks to Nutnfancy's review of it).

Also, my first introduction to quality folding knives was the original Clip It Rescue, which my father carried during his time spent doing technical rescue. He still carries it occasionally when he's not carrying the CRUWEAR Military I gave him. Thanks to my Dad, from an early age I equated Spydercos with quality.

Here are some pics of my father's trusty Clip It Rescue.

My first was a Police SS PE, ATS 55 back in 2000 I believe. Hydraulic smooth. My first high-end modern folder, a gift from my wife. I don't carry it anymore but I'll never part with this one.

My first Delica 3 , As stated when they came out they kinda hit me side-ways, my brother on the other hand it was love at first sight. Only two brands of knives I really like and buy Randall & Spyderco.

I held off on buying a Spyderco for a long time - I thought they were the ugliest knives I had ever seen. My first was a Tenacious, which I've since sold (it was a little too wide in the pocket for me). Now my 204P PM2 is my favorite knife I own. It's ergonomics and utility are what initially won me over, and now I think it's very striking visually. Funny how tastes can change!

My first Spyderco was a Delica 3 SE I bought in 2002, I believe. It and an SAK Tinker were my only two knives for years until I lost it in 2009. Seeking a replacement is what really pulled me in.

My first and only Spyderco was a blue Vg1 Delicate. Flat grind. Nice light little escure.

I've lost it somewhere. Either left it at work and some one snagged it, or much more likely, I've misplaced or dropped it, or it is couch surfing somewhere!

Police SE all stainless , early '80's . My first high quality folder . Very solid and wicked but way too slippery for serious work until I worked over the grip with an electric engraving tool . No fancy scroll work -just random swirls . That really helped with the handling . Loved and carried that Spydie for many, many years of faithful service , but finally got stolen .

For me it was love at first sight with Spyderco.
At the time I had nothing but traditional folders and when a good friend of mine showed me his new PoPo SS full serrated I was floored. I was astounded by the fit and finish, smooth as glass operation. My first question to my friend was "what's the hell is a Spyderco?" My second question was "where the hell can I get a Spyderco?!"
Ergonomic bliss. Finally, someone was designing knives with their brain instead of their eyes.

Mine was a black/black PM2. That got me started in knives. I've had about 12 PM2's since along with a Tenacious, Southard, Mantra 1, two D-flys, two Enduras, and my favorite and current EDC a Domino.

A fully serrated Endura in 1992. Way too big for my hands and it's long gone. But that's what sold me on the opening hole. I don't really like any other method except a flipper (and I still prefer the thumb hole)

Not only my first spidie, but also the first knife I bought.

This caly3 is responsible for getting me eyeball deep into knives. It has led to many more spyderco knives and many other brands as well.

Still have it, still love it!
