Your least favorite keeper.

I can't really answer this question. I've sold one and given away a few, but generally I still have most of the knives I bought. Which is unfortunately a much larger number than it should be. I am just putting off the eventual purge until I have time to deal with it (or need money badly).

So I have scores of "least favorite keepers" which really aren't keepers per se but are just in the to-be-sold category.

The correct and/or proper number of knives is "N+1" ("N" being the current number you have). Therefore, you do not have "... a much larger number than it should be ..." :)

My least favourite keeper is a Trestle Pine Grand Portage. Just not a good thing about it other than a good wharncliffe main. All be darned if I dont just use and abuse it since I paid so much for it.
Last weekend it got used on sheetrock. Did pretty well, but I'm just not partial to this knife at all.

Thanks for the offer Neal. Honestly I couldn't pawn this knife off on anyone else....it's just that bad. Not sure how it ever got past QC if there is such a thing at Queen. As for being a fugazi, well I bought it from Trestle Pines so I doubt it. Just gonna be the knife I love to hate on I suppose.

I guess my least favorite keepers would be my ~4" Stockman knives. I've got a Zebrawood Queen and a Ka-Bar Dog's Head in reclaimed Chestnut. They are much too big/heavy for me to carry, but they are just so pretty. I feel that every knife knut should own certain patterns, and a "full sized" Stockman is absolutely one of them. The Ka-Bar was actually the first "nice"/"expensive" knife I ever bought, so it certainly isn't going anywhere.

I have a RR trapper kit knife that I've carried all of about 3 times in the year-ish that I've had it. I like it because it was the first pocket knife that I successfully put together, but I don't carry it because the springs are just way too soft (pull is about a 2) and the long blades just make it even worse.

I have a few knives that were given to me over the years by friends and colleagues who know I like knives.

They're keepers because they were thoughtful gifts, but they just occupy shelf space.

I have two categories of non-favorite keepers: gifts received that don't really light my fire, and knives needed to complete my collection that don't excite me, due to the cover material. I have three or four that fall into these two groups, and would never get rid of any of them.

Probably my gec 73. I like the knife but the blade is not pinchable like the rest of the knives in my collection so it sees very little pocket time.

Quaboag-be careful throwing Fugazi around, a old favorite band of mine :D. If you change your mind just leave me a VM;). Funny how so many of us have these knives and how similar some of the reasons we keep them are.
Thanks, Neal

Shawn, for what it's worth, I used to be reluctant to carry any knife that exceeded 3.75" closed, but somehow my "standards" have changed and I'll not bat an eye about carrying knives that are 4" or more. Not sure what caused the change, but I think our tastes tend to evolve. (Of course, maybe you'll want ever-smaller knives! :D)

That's a great point, GT. My preferences have certainly changed in the last year, so who knows where I'll be in another year's time. Just another reason to hang onto my big Stockmans and other "big" knives!

I bought my first Opinel a couple years ago, and definitely can appreciate the knife, but I just don't ever carry it. It sits so uncomfortably at the bottom of my pocket. I will take it out on occasion and fiddle around with it, and maybe use it in the kitchen for prepping a meal. Then, it goes back it the little box I keep my traditionals in, and it sits there for a long time. Most likely will never get rid of it, as it is a quality piece, but if one of my boys stole it, for their own use, I'd not have a problem with it.

Probably these two...

GEC Northfield #85 Bullet End Jack with punch in stag (no.24 of 35) and GEC Northfield #61 Square Bolster Congress in Green Briar jigged bone (no.14 of 35.)

Both nice knives but just never resonated with me for some reason. I keep 'em just because they are part of my GEC collection, I reckon. :)

I have an old atco #12 that belonged to my grandpa which I'll never get rid of for sentimental reasons , but it's a cheap piece of junk that was made I Japan and is really crude. If it was actually a good knife I might like it, but I just don't.

Another least favorite keeper would be my new vic pocket pal because the red scales and stainless Steel don't really appeal to me, but that's just based on appearance because it's a great little knife and as a tool I love it.

Math wasn't my best subject, but that sounds right to me. Maybe GT (5K Qs), our resident mathemagician, can crunch the numbers and confirm. :D

Sure, I think Steve is on the right track with "N+1", but I'll suggest a generalization to "N+k", where 1 ≤ k ≤ ??. Just thinking about my own pattern of accumulating more knives, I rarely acquire one new-to-me knife at a time. I tend to "window-shop" and deliberate over a wish list for 2 or 3 months, and then "binge" by purchasing several knives at once (e.g., I ordered 8 knives on Labor Day). My observations on The Porch suggest it's not unusual for many folks here to "buy in bunches" when the frenzy overtakes them!

Getting back to the main idea of this thread, I have several knives that I don't really like and rarely carry/use, but I'll most likely keep because they're the only examples of certain patterns that I own. I won't get more examples, but I probably won't get rid of the single example I have. For example, I have a Rough Rider 1-arm trapper and a RR full-size clip/spey trapper that I'll probably keep, but I don't like them very much. Probably the prime example for me, though, is a Buck 110 a brother gave me a month ago. It's an iconic knife, everyone says it's a must-have pattern, it's a gift from my brother, so it's unquestionably a keeper. But that style knife has zero appeal for me: it's a heavy brick of a knife that I think is quite ugly, I can't imagine situations where its use would be required over a "more reasonable" folder, and I struggle to close the monstrous beast!

Ooo...that's a nice older 110 you got there 5kq. Just as well you don't use it much!
