Your most impractical purchase?

I'm about to pull the trigger on the Microtech Ultratech. No good reason other than it's cool. I want so many others on my wish list, but for some reason I'm wanting a purchase that is completely not practical!

Does this sound ridiculous? Am I the only one? What have you purchased?

Been there done that, in about two or three months when you come across one you really want, you'll look at that one and wonder why you ever bought it. Now, I just save the extra money until......

At least the Ultratech has a pocket clip, is easily serviceable, and has a premium steel (Elmax or S35V) and isn't so expensive that you won't be afraid to use it...

Compare that to an old Nemesis with no hope for spares or service, no pocket clip, 154CM steel, a double edge blade making it illegal to carry in more states, and prices going into the 1000s.

There are also custom OTFs going into the several thousands that are true one offs and if something were to go wrong with those there might be no recourse at all.

I bought into the heavy duty/SHTF/zombie apocalypse knife idea once. Had a really nice custom made. I got it and, not being one to have a use for it, my first thought was, what in the hell am I gonna do with this? I sold it shortly after. Also I ordered a Ferrum Forge Ferox the other day for no good reason other than I want to try 4V steel.

Actually most of my purchases anymore have no rhyme or reason. My Sebenza has proved to be as close to a perfect edc for me as I've found. I like to pair it with a traditional and I've found GEC's 77 & 78 patterns to be perfect also. Everything else I buy now is for kicks.

My first triple digit knife purchase was a Beltrame Italian stiletto. I think it's been carried maybe a total of 3 weeks in the past year, and I can even legally carry it. Now it sits in a drawer collecting little rust spots and has more blade play than I've ever felt in a knife. But it was just another itch that needed to be scratched. If I hadn't of bought it then I'd be drooling over them now.

I wish that I had only made a silly purchase once...
Maturity often arrives directly after the c-c bill.

C81CFPE2 – Para Military 2 Carbon Fiber CPM 154/CPM S90V

Just found a great deal and had to jump on it. Pocketed it around the house a few times and used it a tiny bit, but can't see it as a user.

Nothing wrong with a few collection pieces though.

*edit* -It puts a smile on my face :)

I agree- I have a lot of knives that I bought to collect and never use.

I buy other knives to use and occasionally one of those proves to be impractical. In fixed blades I have a big TOPS knife, maybe a steel eagle, that is impractical because I really have no use for it. Now if the zombies attack maybe I can use it but until then I just look at it occasionally.

My folders are all bought to use. I carry fairly large folders, from Para2's on up to knives like the ZT 0561. I bought a ZT 0200 and found that it was somewhat impractical for me. The 0561 is big and heavy, but not too heavy for its size and the handle is relatively thin so it is easy for me to carry. The 0200 is fatter and heavier, so it crosses the line of what I will actually carry.

This Linton is not only impractical, It's totally useless! :-). Bought it when I was younger, but still ashamed of it.

Another one that hardly can be categorized as practical is this 15" switch from Italy.

I bought a 7" cord-wrapped "tactical bowie" once at a gun show, despite the facts that knives that large are illegal to carry in Texas and that I have all the hand-to-hand combat prowess of a tribble. :D

OP, I'm in the exact situation.

I've always wanted a tanto ultratech. I think they ooze cool and I love their take on the tanto profile. Been looking at the red and purple handled ones for a few days now.

Making it harder is the fact that I can legally own and carry it where I am.

Should we just man up and do it?

I'm carrying a fox karambit today! Ha! it makes me smile every time I wave it out. It's entirly impractical compared to the rest of my knives, but it makes me smile so what else matters? :)

Microtech scarab x 3 , makora II special edition, Balibalistic U-Tac, Terry Guinn Goblin....... The list could go on and on. The thing you need to understand is there is no rationale to buying knives. After $100-150 there is very little gained in performance in relation to the cost you will spend. But I promise you this you will either fire the ultratech for the first time and go, hmmm whatever or you will be like me and it will be a very satisfying and rewarding purchase. And if you can carry and use it you will wonder what you did without it.

Most impractical knife purchase? Considering all the knives that I own that I pretty much knew going into the purchase that I would never use it, I'd say I have bunches of impractical knives. The so called "survival or fighters" probably fall into this catagory. The most impractical.... I don't know; maybe an Italian Stilletto (swithblade). Impractical for me is not necessarily impractical for you.

A North Dakota souvenir "demo" type knife with wood handles (the can opener ... doesn't ...), a Wally World $5.85 "hobo" (fork and spoon are way too small for an adult) ... and maybe the Rough Rider small sunfish/elephant toe; I've found I prefer the large Rough Rider sunfish for my EDC rotation.

'Bout a year ago I picked up a BokerPlus AK-74 spear point auto at a gun show because I like the kick when it opens and it seemed like a fairly well-built little novelty for the price. The guy told me at the time that it was fully warranted and Boker would repair a spring break, etc.....which they will not.

I thought it would end up in a drawer with my Sebenza but it became my at-home carry knife right away, replacing an old Benchmade; clips right comfy in my jeans and draws smoothly. AUS8 but it sharpens quickly and holds an edge. So far zero play. The more I play with it the more I like it---but it's just one of those where I'm sure the day is coming soon...something'll break on it. It's supposed to be a cheap POS, so I won't bond with it.

Thanks for the replies.....and support!

I just feel with this purchase why not?

I bought an HTM Madd Maxx 7 recently.

It's huge, well made, and fun as heck.

It barely fits in my pocket. (But, it does fit., fairly comfortably)
It's monstrous when opened. It isn't a good edc by any means. But, it isn't ungainly or unbalanced, and doesn't weigh as much, or take up as much pocket space, as say, a CS Espada XL.

It has good blade steel, S35VN, a solid lockup, and smooth action.

If I had to whittle my collection down to 5 folders, I would keep this one just because it is so unique.

Impractical, you bet!

And, like your OTF Microtech, totally cool.
