Your opinion on batoning?

There are a range of opinions on batoning. Some see it as fun. Many, including every published survival "expert" I can find and many makers of knives, think batoning - done properly and with care - is a routine technique to reach the dry interior of wet wood or to split off kindling. Others feel it is an insane abuse of a knife. Others, like post 179, see it as exclusively an emergency technique.

The only wood splitting that I've done in the last year or two was on my back porch to get a fire started for s'mores. Since it's concrete, I don't like swinging an axe (hopefully for obvious reasons).... I find batoning on a 2x8 is a great way to get kindling for the fire, and it's easy to control the size of the kindling. I've used all kinds of knives for this, haven't broken one yet. But I haven't used them all yet either.... ;)
