your opinion on how strong a folder should be.

I don't know what he said gooeytek - I clicked on the link and it's listed as - Overall Length: 15 3/8" almost machete range! :D

If you're asking how strong a folder should be, it is my opinion that you need a fixed blade.

Perfect answer, if any doubt crosses your mind when it comes to any task your about to perform with a folder, you should be using a fixed.

Not true. I would not buy a folder unless I knew the pivot and lock would be sufficient for my uses. Granted, my uses are sitting idly in my pocket until I occasionally use it to open a package/letter, I would still not pay good money for a knife unless I knew it could do what I am asking of it. While I don't advise using a folder to baton, don't be rude or call the OP's wishes dumb, either help with suggestions of strong folders, or don't post anything negative. Keep it civil, respectful, and helpful.

I think this bad boy would baton if needed to. Note: I don't advocate batoning with folders. I know that "it can be done safely" in an emergency and if you MUST press it into such service. I never plan to but I have a tried it a few times, just to know that I could. The trick is in my post on the previous page and also remember - don't get greedy with the peices you're trying to break off. A maker of very hard use folders signed off on the use of batoning a folder - but only if done properly and only if needed!

Anyway this vid has always blown me away. Maybe you guys have seen it?

Right, but the "uses" list for a folder should never have baton logs on it. As far as I'm concerned my comment was pretty helpful..

I am prepared to pay zilch extra for this batoning capability. The last time I have done that I was a boy. And even then I used my parent's kitchen knife... Now I have a hatchet in my garage and plenty of fixed blades... :)
If you need to baton with a folder - make sure to unlock the blade first. This way you will not put unnecessary strain on the lock. Than any folder would be able to baton with minimum damage.

Not many comments on the OP's question? Perhaps nobody has done this or can suggest possible candidates?

hey guys i just wanted your opinion on how strong or how long a folders lock up should be or last.. for instance do you expect to do some heavy batoning with a folding knife to still have a solid lock up after you use it to baton? no side to side or up and down blade play.

I agree with one post that suggested the Triad folders by Cold Steel. I'm planning on a session of small limb cutting in October - like you'd do to construct a modest debris shelter and I might as well fuzz some sticks & baton some small peices from our orchard and make a campfire.

My Grandsons like to do this (watch mainly & gather some kindling) and roast hot dogs & marshmallows with Grandpa. It's always nice to pass this down to the youngsters, hoping that it may stick with them. I usually use an RC-4 but I'll use my Recon-1 and caution them how to do it correctly (when they get older of course) and only do it if they didn't have another knife and they were in an emergency situation. ;)

I would never baton a folding knife. I would never baton a fixed blade knife. I would use an axe. Batonning is knife abuse. Just my opinion, as there are many baton fans here.

Amen to that. There are plenty of axe-challenged people out there.

has anybody batoning with there folder have it last with out blade play or do they all eventually end up having blade play.(non fixable blade play that is)

My suggestion to you if you want to baton with a folder is get a Strider SMF or SnG. I've seen a strider folder baton smalls trees, pry bricks, stab and cut sheet metal with little damage that was fixed by aquick shrpening. They are well worth the money....some may disagree but different strokes for different folks. I went from 1-4 striders in 3 weeks, yeah they are that good!

Really, wouldn't an Enlan or SRM be good to baton (if you get a metal handle one or thick liner one), with them being so cheap and very sturdy for the price?

Precisely. The lock is irrelevant. You could use a SAK or Opinel if the blade is long enough to get the job done. The main "danger" in batonning is stressing the pivot/lock to failure, not stressing the blade to failure. No pivot/lock in play=minimal stress. You have turned the folder into a fixed blade.
