Your opinions on Nutnfancy

The winter before last we had lots of snow. I go to work on a winding gravel road. We had a fresh 20-24 inches of snow and I was barely going through it in my 4wd pickup. I came around a corner and a large tree was down blocking the road. There was a 15 foot drop on the right side of the road, a 30 foot steep hill on the left side and with two feet of snow and a winding gravel road, there was no backing up. Out came the kukri and the 10" diameter tree was gone.

This scanario is also very common for people that own 4 wheelers (ATV/UTV). I can't count the times I had to turn around because of a downed tree. Not any more!

Just this weekend my daughter graduated college and they had a camping party in the mountains. The kukris and Bowies chopped trees for shelters, fire wood and to clear the camp area and path. So there may be more "real world" need for chopping than you think. Now I do agree with you that a live tree doesn't need to be chopped for no reason, especially if there is plenty of downed trees, as was the case with the camp. I thought nutn` usually used dead trees as well?

Great example of using a knife on wood. I lived in MT a while, and gained some minor experience there. I'm also from FL, so I've cleared a lot of fallen trees (mostly palm) year after year with hurricanes. Machetes were a staple for me then. I live in VA now, and haven't had to time / resource to explore the woods. But I still think majority of people with knives don't even end up using them for their intended purposes.

Nutnfancy's testing so far seems adequate. His testing doesn't represent FL or tropical weather wood choppers, but they do accurately represent the mid-west mountain range campers. Like I said, I don't agree 100 percent with him all the time but he provides a good perspective most of the time. I also don't go out of my way to watch every one of his videos, but many here seem to be hating on him out of jealousy, to grab attention for themselves, or just bandwagon hopping. There's nothing wrong with respecting what he does, cutlerylover (who focuses mainly on folders), noss4 (focuses on fixed blades and extreme testing), stealthyspider, equip2endure, quietbearr, TuhonBillMcg and other great youtube reviewers.

I think you're right about him chopping dead trees. Never seen him go hack a live one, let alone the fact that there's no reason to anyways.

One thing I find interesting and quite ironic is that many of the critics bashing him for his long winded posts are the same ones who spend hours each day reading this site. You know, the ones who have well over a thousand posts to their name, with a high posts per day average, and they're whining like spending 20 minutes watching a review is some huge waste of their time. These are the same folks who will spend hours keeping up with a single useless thread, or heated debate over which knife is better, day after day, commenting over and over about the same thing... You know... like the ones in the "Nutnfancy... WTF" thread and others like it. At least Nutnfancy's time is spent trying to do something productive on the internet, unlike most of the folks here bashing him when he's not even here to defend himself. Bottom line is, so many of his haters are simply jealous of his following.

I've gone back and forth about him. He can be very redundant and most of his sayings are annoying. But he is very passionate about what he does and I can respect that. Ultimately, I end up watching a lot of his videos even if I don't agree with every opinion he gives.

I suspect that no one agrees with anyone all the time. But the information provided is more data to process in deciding what one wants, and if it will be useful.
I appreciate all the reviews no matter by whom. An average guy that says his knife failed or loses its edge is something to consider.

I have found that on some forums, not this one, there are those who seem to believe that their opinions are absolute truths. One mod on another forum stated that it was rude not to follow the advice given to a newbie.

When I am thinking about a particular knife I go to You Tube and watch the videos.

Jerry

I've been trying to not contribute to this thread, but I can't resist, as I just bought a Ruger pistol on which Nutnfancy did a decent couple of reviews. Of course he wasn't my only source of biased feedback, but he helped me decide on it. Anyways, I think he's a decent reviewer who spends a lot of his time reviewing different equipment-knives, guns, scopes, multi tools, flashlights, etc. Wondering if he actually has a job though. Regardless, he's not annoying to watch or hear and covers a lot of popular and new gear, which I like. I don't think he's quite the "commando" that he thinks he is. If I am thinking about buying something that he may have reviewed, I will usually try to see if I can find his vid and watch it. My .02.

He's interesting and makes some good points, but I wouldn't let his opinions be the only ones when choosing a knife.

And I definately disagree with his rejection of the Spyderco Para-military, and actually consider it better then the Military version.

But then again, that's only based my honest opinion and experience.

I think there is some good information in there if you can deal with the long-winded reviews. But I have a strong aversion to arrogance and self-righteousness. He's making money from those videos and, even though it's not coming directly out of my pocket, I won't contribute to that. So I have gone elsewhere.

I would love to watch someone who was a little more humble doing those things.

He takes the time to make the videos, why not make a few bucks from hours of work?

Not like your even paying him, youtube is..

I think that guy is doing a good job reviewing stuff based on what he likes and on his own true experiences. I find what he's doing helpful and constructive.
