My fellow knife enthusiast, I ran into a small issue with my newly purchased Hinderer and wasn't sure if I'm overreacting on this one.
So I noticed a couple weeks back that my Eclipse had belt grinds going down the blade. I'm attaching photos for everyone to see.
I wanted to get some opinions here before I write back to Rick since it's been ten days without any updates. While it's a small flaw it stands out in the stonewash finish. How many people would wait this long to check up on Rick? I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt and the patience I can afford. I plan on putting the knife through some hard use, but I do like that feeling of getting a $400+ knife without defects like this.
I should add, I am the type to carry a knife new with minimal use until after having it for a month or two, by then I have no problem with scratches and what not but how many people would find this acceptable? My email was more or so taking up an issue with the person putting the knife together overlooking the flaw. My thinking is the last person to handle this particular piece should have caught this one. Curious where you guys stand.

I've never seen anything like that get past quality control from any branded knife in my life, even Smith & Wesson special ops $12 knives never have that bad of a mistake so visible.

I don't have that knife, I'm not familiar with them....

Is this a non coated blade?

That doesn't look like grind marks to me. Weird how uniform, close, and long bunched up like that.

Normally my errant scratches look more chaotic

That blade was definitely stone washed with that gouge and sharpened after, someone should have threw that off the line. Even if it was a second, I have never seen a second from any reputable company with that bad a flaw in such an visible place.

Now also wondering how DLT didn't catch it either. My last Hinderer was flawless, now I'm sorry I got rid of it. But this passed through too many hands, maybe everyone looked at it and thought it won't matter since it's a "hard use" knife????
It has some of these uniform scratches towards the tip of the blade, if not belt then perhaps milling marks from the blade being shaped.

My Emmett had that issue.

So, I wasn't the first to kiss my knife.

That's the way I looked at it. Lent it to my friend. She'll bring down a Buck or two and use it to process the game.

There'll be more marks and I'll get some deer meat. Et al.

(Not telling you what to do!)

(Just catch your breath and understand that the knife you have is fantastic and totally ready for hard use.)

(Wonderful purchase BTW)

Did you specifically ask DLT to check the knife for you before shipping? Also, why didn't you just return it to DLT as soon as seeing the defect on the blade? That would be what I do. It's just too much hassle to go through the warranty.

Wonderful point, and part of me shares that perspective. I'm on the fence with this one because it doesn't take away from the amazing edge it has. It dissappears in certain light too lol.
It just looks like rushed work. I gave Rick my opinion that this would be a great opportunity for his assemblers to learn from this hiccup. Even Chris Reeves knives get sent back from time to time. I wouldn't hold it against Hinderer and still plan on buying more. I believe in giving another man the opportunity to address a mistake before I jump to conclusions. We all make mistakes, I'm sure Rick cannot handle each and every knife that rolls off the line.

I did not ask them to check this one out.
In the twelve years I've been ordering from DLT this would be the first defect they sent me. So they have a great record in my book. Honestly wasn't sure whether this would be the route since DLT cannot replace the knife but maybe it's better for them to handle warranty work? Ricks production is pretty sporadic in terms of model and material make up. Who knows when he'll be doing Eclipse's in MagnaCut again 🤔

Your position is fair and reasonable.

I hope your resolution is amicable.

My Emmett isn't my only knife. Plus, I'll get some deer meat.

It is your money and your outcome. I hope it ends well. Please let us know about your customer service adventure!
