I ran up against a commitment to purchase that turned out to requirer payment by Money Order to a P.O. Box.

I will follow through with my commitment, but have a real problem with this type of payment request. Feels like a Third World Western Union scan. I'm not saying this one is are was but sure makes me nervous.

Your option?

I wouldn't do it unless the seller has a number of references. Even then, if he decides to "cash out" and just collect money from everyone for free and then disappear, your out of luck. You can at least get your money back with paypal.

I can only recall one somewhat different payment type, but the buyer was a really reliable good guy whom I've known online for a long time. I wouldn't feel committed if someone I didn't know sprang a surprise on me, though.

if its a seller who is a longstanding member, with good feedback, i wouldn't be concerned.

check with some others who have purchased from him and see if the payment request was the same.

The knifemaker/seller that I believe you are referring to has four positive feedback ratings on this site and has been a member for a couple of years. If a GB&U search doesn't turn up any negative results then I wouldn't have any problem with it. You have to remember that a PO box is the only option for a lot of people, especially those in rural areas. Such is the case for my area.

A postal money order is a very common form of payment here. Personal checks are often frowned upon because it takes so long to confirm funds and not everyone wants to deal with PayPal or let them have access to their bank account.

I believe that the seller in question also offered to accept PayPal after you stated in his thread that the PO Box/Money Order was not acceptable to you due to lack of buyer protection.

In my view, much of the decision about going forward involves:

1. How well you know the other party - or what kind of references they have, and
2. Just how the 'commitment' for this type of payment arrangement occurred.

The method of payment is part of the deal.
It's got to be agreed to by all involved.

If you do send a money order to a PO Box, send it from a Post Office via Certified Mail with Delivery Confirmation and Signature Confirmation.
Then, whomever picks up the money order will have to sign for it at the counter - it won't be left for pickup in the PO Box.

Thanks for the all the opioions, In general in the day and age of communications. The more we can find out the better and if you just feel right about don't do it. As to the quantity of positive results well the biggest lose I have every had (not on the this forums) was from a on that had 1000's of positive transaction.

I dont remember the last time I wrote a check. Ha

Thanks again

Some people don't or can't accept PP. I myself don't like them and won't accept them unless there is no other option. I always tell people upfront money order from usps or money gram only. Its all about their communication skills and feedback in my eyes. I always pay with a money order also. Most people don't care but I accept Alert Pay and use them anytime anyone will accept them. They are a great company in my eyes.
