Your Perfect knife?

Hey BF,

I was just thinking about what my perfect knife would be. Here it is;

Blade Length: 3.5 inches
Handle Width: 0.5 inches
Closed Length: 4.8 inches
Blade Material: S30V Black DLC coated (or maybe tiger striped)
Blade Shape: Modified Drop point (like the 0560)
Ergonomics: Same as the Zero Tolerance 0560.
Pivot: Ball Bearing
Deployment method: Hinderer flipper and Emerson Wave
Handle Material: G10, but not too rough that it will rip my pockets
Pocket Clip: Deep carry
Locking System: Axis Lock

AKA: A little thinner and shortly smaller 0560, with an axis lock and also have a wave deployment.

If you could make your perfect knife... what would it be?

Mine would be a paramilitary 2 in m4 with the blade to handle ratio of a sebenza and full carbon fiber handles not the peel ply stuff spyderco usually uses. Maybe delete the finger choil if it helped get the blade to handle ratio closer to 50/50. I would buy one in a heart beat.

If you can't tell I'm a big fan of the KW pm2 sprint

I'm a big fan of the Brad Southard AVO design, but with a thinner blade. I never need a blade that's thicker than 1/8", although I'm sure that other folks do. Grip thickness about 0.450" with 3.5" blade max. Flipper or stud or Spydie-hole is fine...they all work. Weight should be no more than 5 ounces. Titanium slabs...some G10 or CF is okay on one side.
I see a lot of nice knives, and commissioned three customs, but never quite found the perfect one.
Don't really care to...I'm having too much fun just looking for it.

It doesn't exist.

I like variety, I like the hunt for the next knife, the anticipation, and the pleasure at having a new knife. I don't try to codify what my next knife should be: my next knife will find me, when it's time.

Well it has changed some over the last six months or so but :
A folder
This handle

Different knives but same handle style and shape

This blade (top knife in photo) 3.5 to 4 inch 1.5 to 2mm thick
Yah . . . I know . . . that's crazy talk . . . crazy talk . . .

Alternatively this blade and basic handle shape (second knife down) with the Krey-Ex rubber/texture above.

Mid back lock

This steel by this maker top knife (M390 by who ever did this Rtiter Grip)

Titanium liners and clip

No coating . . . you can’t see it but I am making a cross with my fingers and hissing as if to ward off a vampire.

Blade finish grit blasted or polished for low cutting drag not looks.

And some days I want the handle the same texture and sculpted but from machined titanium.
That pretty much covers it. I wouldn't mind a high performance blade by a custom maker . . . perhaps in 10V but I have found the cutting performance I am after in the M390 . . . as I always say : Good enough is good enough but better is better.

Sorry man, but perfect for what? EDC, hiking, around camp... All around? Maybe my Busse SOB

Well this doesn't totally meet your criteria, 3.35" and S35VN but I like it. Also this version of the Buck Spitfire has absolutely no blade play.

My EDC for months now as been the Spyderco para 2.
If they could make a para 2 with an 4.1-inch blade and keep the compression lock using bohler M390 that would be it for me.

Schrade 93ot wrangler. Or any clip main, sheepsfoot secondary serpentine jack between 3 5/8" and 3 1/4" closed. Preferably with half decent steel like 440c or up and nice smooth bone handles.

The case texas jack is the closest production I know of with its zulu secondary instead of a sheepsfoot.

Spydiechef with a more deeply ground stone-wash (or satin finish) blade with a bushing pivot. Blade can be a little thinner to 0.10" (from 0.11"). Maybe teflon washers.

Depends on the task, of course, but for general every day carry and use:

Blade Length: 3.75 inches
Handle Width: 0.4 inches
Closed Length: 4.3 inches
Blade Material: LC200N DLC coated
Blade Shape: Long leaf shape (ala Calypso)
Ergonomics: Like the recon 1
Deployment method: Spyderhore, waved
Handle Material: G10
Pocket Clip: Deep carry, 4 position
Locking System: TriAd

A carbon fiber scaled titanium linered kershaw skyline with axis lock in uncoated cpm m4. Hit the scales at 3oz, all that and under $100 since we're dreaming.

I always enjoy the "fantasy knife build" threads.

Mine would be an Opinel No.8 Outdoor knife (spear point) with nice dark timber handle (Turkish walnut maybe) and a blade of CTS-XHP. The design is otherwise perfect for me.

I think my perfect pocket knife is coming. Spyderco has a 2.6" FFG bladed, dark gray G10 Baby Jess Horn coming out in 2017. No wide blade there. It has a nice usable blade like a trapper (a tad wider) that can be used for a wide variety of actual everyday things.

Is there really such a thing. Over time needs change, circumstances change, etc. Then the "perfect" knife no longer meets those needs.

Perfect for what purpose? I have a lot of perfect knives all for varying purposes, much like what is the perfect hammer. I have sledge hammers to tack hammers each has a specific intended purpose. For EDC it always becomes a compromise for what my knife expectations will be for that day.

I am easily sastified I love my mini grip with thumb hole. Best knife ever. Love the 154

My ffg VG10 Delica is awful close to perfect for my edc needs. The Victorinox Fieldmaster is the perfect sak in my opinion.

These are my two perfect (for me) knives as I like small knives (I live in California) and do not like flippers (just my preference):

Custom Emerson mini-CQC-7. Incredibly smooth action and micarta to die for. And I love the blade shape.

William Henry with damascus over ZDP-189, Mokume bolster, and beautiful CF scales:
